Start journey Learn moreThe biggest misconception about eating on Wegovy is that the reduced appetite does the work on its own. It doesn't. The foods you choose while on semaglutide shape how much muscle you keep, how well you tolerate the medicine, and how sustainable your results are. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine; a prescriber assesses whether it's right for you before treatment begins. But once you're on it, nutrition matters more than most people expect — here's what the evidence and clinical practice actually support.

A lot of people start Wegovy expecting their diet to sort itself out. Appetite does fall (often substantially) and that's partly the point. But eating less without thinking about what you're eating creates a different problem: the body, losing weight quickly, draws on both fat and lean muscle for energy. Muscle loss slows metabolism and makes keeping weight off harder long-term. The clinical evidence behind Wegovy is built on trials where participants followed a reduced-calorie diet alongside the injection, the two work together, not as alternatives.
The NHS's guidance on healthy weight underlines that protein, fibre and regular activity all matter while on a weight-management medicine, and the NHS Better Health lose weight guidance gives a practical framework for building those habits. So the question isn't just "am I eating less?", it's "am I eating enough of the right things within whatever smaller amount I'm having?"
That reframe changes the shopping list significantly.
Aim to get a source of protein into every meal, even when that meal is small. Eggs, chicken, turkey, fish, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, tofu, legumes and low-fat dairy all count. The practical target most prescribers and dietitians suggest for adults on a weight-loss medicine is somewhere around 1.2–1.6g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight daily, though your personal plan belongs in a conversation with your clinical team, not a web page.
Why the emphasis? Semaglutide suppresses appetite broadly; it doesn't selectively protect muscle. If your smaller meals are mostly refined carbohydrates or highly processed foods, muscle loss accelerates. A meal built around protein (even a 300-calorie one) does a better job of preserving lean mass than the same calories from toast and jam. Many people on Wegovy find a high-protein yoghurt kept in the fridge door becomes a reliable fallback when nothing else sounds appealing. Small. Easy. Enough.
Strength or resistance exercise alongside good protein intake is the most effective combination for maintaining muscle during weight loss, which is why eating well on Wegovy and staying active are genuinely complementary, not optional extras.
Nausea, reflux and early fullness are the most commonly reported side effects with semaglutide, particularly in the first few weeks or after a dose step-up. Certain foods make them noticeably worse; others are well tolerated. The NHS medicines page for semaglutide sets out the full side-effect picture and advises speaking to a pharmacist or GP if symptoms become difficult to manage.
If you want to go deeper on choosing meals that work with the medicine rather than against it, our guide to the best foods to eat while taking Wegovy walks through which options tend to sit well at each stage of treatment. Foods that commonly worsen symptoms: fried or very greasy meals, large portions of red meat, very spicy dishes, carbonated drinks, and alcohol. There's no absolute prohibition, but if you've just increased your dose and you're already nauseous, a heavy curry is probably not the right test. Keep portions modest; eat slowly; don't lie down soon after eating. These aren't complicated rules, but they make a noticeable difference for most people.
Fibre deserves a mention separately. It supports gut motility and helps with constipation, which some people experience. Vegetables, fruit, pulses and wholegrains all contribute. Introduce higher-fibre foods gradually if your gut is already unsettled.
Wegovy sometimes reduces cravings for very sweet or very fatty foods, not universally, but it's a well-reported effect. That shift is worth using. Ultra-processed foods (biscuits, crisps, ready meals heavy in additives, sugary drinks) are easy calories that don't support muscle, don't fill you up in any lasting way, and can still fit in a smaller appetite if you let them crowd out more useful options.
That doesn't mean a strict ban. Rigid restriction often backfires, and the goal is a pattern of eating you can maintain after treatment ends. If you're curious about how sweets and sugary foods interact with Wegovy, we've covered that in detail separately. The broad principle: deprioritise foods that deliver little beyond calories, and use the reduced appetite as an opportunity to build meals around protein, vegetables and wholegrains, the foods most likely to carry the results forward. Our full breakdown of the best foods to eat on Wegovy covers exactly how to put that into practice day to day.
For anyone wondering what this looks like compared with eating patterns on tirzepatide, the food guidance for semaglutide generally follows similar logic.
