The Wegovy tablet, approved on 11 June 2026, made the UK the first country in Europe to license an oral GLP-1 medicine for weight management. The tablet uses an absorption enhancer called SNAC to allow semaglutide to pass through the stomach lining. Are products sold as a semaglutide bottle safe to use?

The short answer is that the MHRA does not recommend using any semaglutide product that has not been dispensed through a UK-registered pharmacy on a valid prescription. The MHRA has publicly warned about fake and unlicensed weight-loss injectables sold online and via social media since 2023, and enforcement activity through 2025 included large seizures of illegally traded medicines and the raid of an illicit UK manufacturing site producing counterfeit tirzepatide pens. The same risks apply to unlicensed semaglutide products in any format. Products sold as a "semaglutide bottle" or a vial of semaglutide from an unverified online seller carry no guarantee of the contents, concentration or sterility. Some seized fakes have contained insulin, a serious and potentially life-threatening substitution.
