Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, which means the only legal route to it is through a clinical assessment and a valid prescription. NHS access exists but is tightly rationed by phase and eligibility criteria; for many people right now, a regulated private pharmacy is the practical alternative. Here is exactly how both routes work, step by step.

The step-by-step guide to getting Mounjaro legally and safely in the UK

Is Mounjaro actually available on the NHS right now?

Yes, but only for a narrow group of patients at this stage. NICE recommended tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro) for NHS use in December 2024 under NICE Technology Appraisal TA1026, and rollout is being phased by clinical need. The first cohort, active from June 2025, covers adults with a BMI of 40 or above alongside four or more specific weight-related conditions, high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, or type 2 diabetes. A second cohort covering BMI 35–39.9 with four or more of those conditions activated in June 2026.

From April 2026, GP practices can prescribe under the new QOF contract, though participation is optional and varies by area. Every NHS patient must also take part in structured diet and activity support. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee a prescription or a short wait. If you want to understand the NHS route in full, our dedicated page on Mounjaro on the NHS covers each cohort and what your GP needs to see.

For people who do not yet meet NHS criteria, or who do not want to wait, a private prescription from a regulated UK pharmacy is the alternative the law permits.

What is the legal process for buying Mounjaro privately in the UK?

Mounjaro is a Prescription-Only Medicine. That means no pharmacy, registered or otherwise, may supply it without a valid UK prescription from an authorised prescriber. The steps are straightforward when done properly.

First, you complete a clinical consultation, this can be done online through a registered pharmacy service. The consultation covers your weight, BMI, health history, current medications and any conditions that might affect suitability. At nume, a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber personally reviews that information the same day you submit it; you can read more about our clinical oversight on the clinical team page. If the prescriber considers you suitable, a prescription is issued. If not, you are told why and what your options are.

Second, your identity and current weight are verified (at nume this includes photo-ID checks and live video weight confirmation) before any medicine is dispensed. This is not bureaucracy for its own sake; it is what separates a clinically safe supply from a guess.

Third, once dispensed, your order is shipped via tracked courier. Order before 12pm on a working day and it leaves the same afternoon, arriving the next working day. Worth noting: if you are planning to start around a bank holiday, factor in the delivery schedule, placing your order on the Friday beforehand keeps things on track.

For a broader look at the private ordering process, buying Mounjaro privately is covered in detail separately.

How do you know whether an online pharmacy is genuine?

Every pharmacy operating legally in the UK must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. You can check any online pharmacy in seconds on the GPhC pharmacy register. Look for the GPhC logo on the pharmacy's website, clicking it should take you directly to the register entry. nume's GPhC premises registration number is 9012878, verifiable at the register directly.

The MHRA has issued repeated warnings about fake weight-loss pens sold through social media and unverified online sellers. In October 2025, enforcement teams raided a UK site manufacturing counterfeit tirzepatide pens, and around 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines (valued at roughly £45 million) were seized across 2025. Fake pens have in some cases contained insulin, causing serious harm. The red flags are consistent: sellers offering Mounjaro without a prescription, prices far below what any legitimate supply chain can sustain, and discount codes from accounts with no verifiable pharmacy registration. If you encounter a suspect seller, report them via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Sourcing through a GPhC-registered pharmacy with a licensed UK supply chain is the one check that removes almost all of that risk. Our guide to buying Mounjaro online safely walks through each verification step in plain terms.

Does your situation affect which route is right for you?

It often does. If your GP has already been prescribing you Mounjaro and you want to continue without a gap, a private pharmacy can take you on as a transfer patient, you will need to provide evidence of your current dose and treatment history. If you are starting from scratch, the consultation establishes whether you meet the licensed eligibility criteria: adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related health condition such as prediabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol, and many people beginning treatment do so at the starting dose of Mounjaro 5 mg. Lower BMI thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance.

People sometimes ask whether their GP can prescribe Mounjaro privately. The answer is yes, in principle, though not all GP practices offer that service. Our page on getting Mounjaro through your GP explains what to ask and what to expect. If you have questions about NHS eligibility specifically, whether you can get Mounjaro from the NHS is a separate resource worth reading before your next GP appointment.

When you are ready to take the private route, start your free consultation and a prescriber will review your case the same working day.
