Raw semaglutide — the unformulated active ingredient — cannot legally be purchased, dispensed or self-administered in the UK. The only lawful route to semaglutide for weight management is a licensed prescription medicine, dispensed by a registered pharmacy following clinical assessment by a qualified prescriber. If you are trying to find semaglutide because you want to lose weight, that medicine is Wegovy, and a GPhC-registered pharmacy like ours can guide you through the proper process. This page explains why raw compounds carry serious risks, what the legitimate steps look like, and how to protect yourself from unregulated sellers.

How to get licensed semaglutide legally and safely in the UK, step by step

Step 1: Understand why raw or unformulated semaglutide is not a route anyone can take

Semaglutide the compound and Wegovy the medicine are not the same thing. The licensed product contains a precisely measured, pharmaceutical-grade dose of semaglutide combined with the excipients needed for safe subcutaneous delivery, tested for sterility, stability and potency to strict MHRA standards. Raw active pharmaceutical ingredients are not manufactured to those standards when sold outside the licensed supply chain, and they are not intended for human use.

The MHRA's Yellow Card reporting scheme has documented hospitalisations linked to counterfeit and unlicensed weight-loss injectables. In one enforcement sweep, fake pens were found to contain insulin rather than the compound on the label, which is one reason buying a semaglutide pen from a GPhC-registered pharmacy matters so much. Sellers of raw or unformulated semaglutide (often marketed as "research chemicals" or "peptides") sit entirely outside UK pharmaceutical regulation. There is no clinical assessment, no quality control and no legal recourse if something goes wrong.

The short version: if a supplier will hand over semaglutide without a prescription from a registered UK prescriber, what they are selling is not a safe or legal medicine. The only lawful way to buy semaglutide online in the UK is through a pharmacy registered with the GPhC, dispensing against a valid prescription.

Step 2: Check whether you are eligible for a semaglutide prescription

Wegovy is licensed in the UK for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related health condition, for example, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, raised cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. Lower BMI thresholds can apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK clinical guidance. These are the manufacturer's licensed criteria; a prescriber then reviews the whole picture, including your medical history, current medicines and any contraindications.

Wegovy is not licensed for anyone under 18, and it is not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding or when actively trying to conceive. A prescriber will ask about all of this during your consultation. The NHS criteria for Wegovy are narrower still, requiring referral through a specialist weight management service, but a private prescription through a regulated pharmacy does not depend on those NHS thresholds, provided the licensed eligibility criteria are met.

If you are unsure where you sit, our guide to getting semaglutide in the UK walks through eligibility in plain language, and the NHS BMI calculator is a good starting point before your consultation.

Step 3: Start a consultation with a GPhC-registered pharmacy, and verify them first

Once you know you likely meet the eligibility criteria, the process itself is straightforward. At nume, it begins with a free online consultation. Your answers go to a real GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber (a named clinician, not a queuing algorithm) who reviews them the same day. If your consultation arrives before 12pm on a weekday, that review happens before the school run is done. Where additional evidence is needed, such as a recent weight or a GP letter for a dose increase, your prescriber will ask for it before approving anything.

Before you start with any online pharmacy, take thirty seconds to check them on the GPhC's online register. Every legally operating UK online pharmacy holds a GPhC premises registration you can look up by name or number. Ours is 9012878, searchable directly at pharmacyregulation.org. If a pharmacy cannot be found on that register, do not use them.

Red flags to watch for: no clinical consultation, prices far below the current UK market, no GPhC registration visible, or anything that resembles a discount code for a prescription medicine. The NHS route to semaglutide is separate, if you want to explore that alongside the private option, our overview covers both.

Step 4: What happens after clinical approval at nume

If our prescriber approves your prescription, your treatment is dispensed from our GPhC-registered pharmacy and collected by DPD the same day for next-working-day delivery, tracked to your door in plain packaging. There are no subscriptions and no automatic renewals. Every repeat order goes through fresh clinical review, our prescribers look again at your progress and any changes to your health before the next supply is approved.

Aftercare is available seven days a week. If you have questions between orders, our support team connects you to clinical staff, not a chatbot. For a fuller picture of how we operate and who the team is, our about us page has the detail. When you are ready to take the next step, starting your free consultation takes a few minutes and costs nothing.
