Can a doctor prescribe Wegovy in the UK?

Step 1: the clinical assessment, what any prescriber needs to establish

Before a prescriber puts their name to a Wegovy prescription, they need to confirm several things. First, that you meet the licensed eligibility criteria: in the UK, Wegovy is authorised for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above if at least one weight-related condition is present (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea). Lower BMI thresholds can apply for people from certain ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance.

Beyond the BMI figure, the prescriber checks for contraindications. A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2 syndrome, a history of pancreatitis, and certain gastrointestinal conditions are among the reasons the medicine may not be appropriate. Women who could become pregnant are asked about contraception, because Wegovy is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Under-18s are not included in the licence.

The prescriber also reviews any other medicines you take. Wegovy slows gastric emptying, which can affect how oral medicines are absorbed, if you take an oral contraceptive pill, for instance, your prescriber will discuss this with you. Step 2: NHS vs private, who your prescriber is depends on which route you take

On the NHS, Wegovy is available through specialist weight management services under NICE guidance (TA875). The criteria are tight: NICE recommends semaglutide for adults with a BMI of 35 or above who also have at least one weight-related comorbidity, treated as part of a multidisciplinary specialist service, for a maximum of two years. Lower BMI thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds. Waiting lists for these services are commonly long, and not every GP practice has a pathway to refer into them quickly.

Whether your GP can prescribe Wegovy directly depends on their individual prescribing scope. Privately, a wider group of prescribers can assess and prescribe Wegovy, including GPs working in private practice and independent prescribers at regulated online pharmacies. Private prescribing uses the medicine's licensed criteria (BMI 30+, or 27+ with a weight-related condition) rather than the more restrictive NICE thresholds, and there is no waiting list. The prescriber must still carry out a full assessment; the clinical rigour does not change, only the access route.

Step 3: what to look for in any prescriber offering Wegovy online

If you are considering a private route, the prescriber's credentials and the pharmacy's registration matter more than almost anything else. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, a seller offering it without first completing a clinical assessment, or without being registered with the relevant regulatory body, is operating outside UK law.

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) maintains a public register of online pharmacies. You can check any pharmacy you're considering at the GPhC pharmacy register. A registered pharmacy number should be displayed on the pharmacy's website and be verifiable with one click. If it isn't there, or doesn't match, that is a firm red flag.
