Can a GP Prescribe Mounjaro for Weight Loss in the UK?

Step 1, understanding what changed in April 2026

Until spring 2026, Mounjaro on the NHS was almost entirely confined to specialist weight management services. The updated GP contract that took effect on 1 April 2026 changed that: practices can now prescribe tirzepatide in primary care, and those that do must also offer a wrap-around programme of diet and activity support alongside it. Whether you go through your GP surgery or a private online service, the same basic check applies: any pharmacy dispensing Mounjaro in the UK must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. You can confirm a pharmacy's registration directly at the GPhC register. For online pharmacies specifically, look for the GPhC's registered internet pharmacy logo on the site; clicking it should take you to the pharmacy's register entry.
