Can a GP Prescribe Wegovy in the UK?

The myth: your GP can simply write you a Wegovy prescription

Most people searching this question expect a straightforward yes or no. The honest answer is more layered. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, so any appropriately qualified prescriber, including a GP, is legally permitted to issue a prescription. But permission in law and practical availability through your GP surgery are two different things.

NICE's recommendation for semaglutide (TA875, published March 2023) ties NHS access to specialist weight management services, with a maximum treatment duration of two years. That guidance was aimed at secondary care teams, not general practice. The result: most NHS GP practices have not historically been set up to prescribe it at all. Patients referred through this route often face long waiting lists before they see a specialist, let alone receive a prescription.

Things shifted from April 2026. Under a new GP contract, practices in England may now prescribe tirzepatide (Mounjaro) directly, and NHS England is expanding the medicines-for-obesity landscape, but Wegovy's NHS primary care footing remains narrower. Whether your GP's practice can prescribe Wegovy on the NHS depends on whether it has opted into the relevant commissioning pathway and whether you meet the eligibility thresholds for your area. What the eligibility criteria actually require

NICE TA875 recommends semaglutide for adults with a BMI of 35 or above, plus at least one weight-related condition, within a specialist weight management programme. Lower BMI thresholds apply for South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds, typically 2.5 kg/m² below the standard figures.

NHS England notes that access is further phased by how many qualifying conditions a person has and their BMI band. For most NHS patients, the pathway involves a referral, a waiting period, and then assessment by a multidisciplinary team. Even once approved, the NICE recommendation caps NHS treatment at two years. Private eligibility, by contrast, follows the licensed prescribing criteria in the Wegovy SmPC directly: adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnoea. A prescriber still makes the final call; meeting a BMI threshold alone does not guarantee a prescription.

When a doctor prescribes Wegovy privately: what to expect

The prescribing process through a private route follows the same clinical logic as an NHS assessment, just without the referral queue. A prescriber reviews your health history, current medicines, BMI, and any weight-related conditions. They check for contraindications, Wegovy is not recommended in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or for anyone trying to conceive, and it is not licensed for under-18s.
