Can I get weight loss injections from my doctor in the UK?

Step 1: Understand which medicines your doctor can actually prescribe

When patients ask their GP about weight loss injections, they usually have either Mounjaro or Wegovy in mind. Both are licensed for weight management in the UK, and both work by mimicking gut hormones that regulate appetite and, in Mounjaro's case, blood sugar as well. They are not the same drug, and they are not interchangeable, your prescriber chooses between them based on your health history, not just your weight.

It is also worth knowing what your GP cannot do. Ozempic is semaglutide too, but its UK licence covers type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. A prescriber cannot legitimately issue an Ozempic prescription for weight management, however familiar the name. If a GP does prescribe for weight loss, it will be one of the two licensed options. Both medicines carry a Black Triangle (▼) designation, meaning the MHRA monitors new safety data as it emerges. Step 2: Check whether you meet the NHS eligibility criteria

The NHS route to these injections is real, but it is narrow for now. NICE recommended tirzepatide in December 2024 and NHS England has phased its rollout by how many weight-related conditions a patient has alongside their BMI. As of summer 2026, the NHS is treating adults with a BMI of 40 or above and four or more qualifying conditions (high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, or type 2 diabetes). A second cohort covering BMI 35–39.9 with four or more of those conditions opened in June 2026. Thresholds are 2.5 kg/m² lower for people of South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds.

Wegovy on the NHS sits within specialist weight management services, which typically means a referral and a waiting list. NICE's appraisal of semaglutide (TA875) sets out the criteria, which include treatment within a multidisciplinary specialist setting for a maximum of two years.

From April 2026, GP practices can prescribe tirzepatide directly under the updated NHS contract, but practices opt in, and not all have. Your GP's surgery may not yet be participating. Asking your GP is entirely reasonable; they can tell you whether the practice is set up for it and whether you are currently eligible. Step 3: Know what happens if you do not qualify, or cannot wait

Many people who ask their GP about weight loss injections find they fall just outside the current NHS thresholds, or their practice is not yet set up to prescribe. That is not a dead end. Step 4: Whichever route you take, a prescriber must be involved

This point is worth stating plainly because of the volume of misleading content online. Weight loss injections in the UK are prescription-only medicines. No seller, platform or service is permitted to supply them without a prescription from a qualified prescriber following a clinical assessment. Any listing that appears to offer these medicines without one is operating outside the law, and the MHRA has seized large quantities of fake pens sold this way, some containing insulin rather than the medicine on the label.

A legitimate service, whether your NHS GP or a GPhC-registered private pharmacy, will review your medical history, check for contraindications, and make a clinical decision.
