Can Wegovy affect your eyes — and what does the evidence say?

Step 1, Understanding what eye effects have actually been reported

Most people taking Wegovy don't experience eye problems. The side-effect profile for semaglutide is predominantly gastrointestinal: nausea, changes in bowel habit, reflux and similar complaints dominate the early weeks of treatment. The eye concern that has attracted most scientific scrutiny is NAION (non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy) a condition where blood supply to the optic nerve is interrupted, causing sudden, painless vision loss in one eye. A study published in 2024 in JAMA Ophthalmology found a higher-than-expected rate of NAION among patients prescribed semaglutide compared with those on other diabetes or weight-loss medicines. Crucially, observational data can show an association without proving cause. Step 2 (Diabetic retinopathy: the higher-risk group

Step 3, Dry eyes, temporary blur and other minor visual symptoms

Separate from NAION and retinopathy, some semaglutide users notice dry or gritty eyes, particularly in the first weeks. This is not listed as a common side effect in the SmPC but appears in patient-reported accounts. Blood-sugar fluctuations, which can occur as the medicine begins working, are a known cause of temporary blurred vision, your lens changes shape slightly with shifts in glucose levels, and this typically corrects itself as levels stabilises.

If you wear contact lenses and notice increased dryness, keeping lubricating drops nearby (perhaps in the same spot as your weekly pen, whether that's the fridge door or a designated shelf) is a practical step while your body adjusts. Step 4 (When to get medical help and how to report concerns

Any sudden change in vision) blurring that appears quickly, loss of vision in one eye, dark patches or curtain-like shadows in your visual field, needs urgent medical attention. Don't attribute these to the medicine and wait it out; NAION, if it does occur, is time-sensitive.
