Can Wegovy Make Your Heart Race?

Clinical trials of semaglutide 2.4mg recorded a small but consistent rise in resting heart rate compared with placebo, around 1–3 bpm on average.
Palpitations and a racing or pounding sensation are listed as known side effects in the NHS medicines page for semaglutide.
The effect is generally mild; however, anyone with a pre-existing heart rhythm condition should discuss this with their prescriber before starting Wegovy.
A sudden, severe or sustained fast heartbeat is a reason to seek urgent medical advice, do not wait for your next scheduled appointment.

Wegovy (semaglutide) can cause an increased heart rate in some people. Clinical trial data show a small, measurable rise in resting pulse — typically around two to three beats per minute on average — that tends to persist throughout treatment. It is not dangerous for most people, but it is real, it is documented, and it is worth understanding before you start. These medicines are prescription-only, and a prescriber assesses your cardiac history as part of any clinical review.

What the clinical evidence tells us about Wegovy and heart rate, and when to act

What the STEP 1 trial data actually recorded

The question of whether Wegovy makes your heart race first surfaced clearly in the STEP 1 phase-3 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Across 68 weeks, adults taking semaglutide 2.4mg experienced a small but statistically consistent rise in resting heart rate versus placebo, the kind of number that looks modest on a population average but is noticeable if you happen to be on the higher end of the individual distribution. The mechanism is not fully understood; GLP-1 receptor agonists appear to have a mild direct chronotropic effect on the heart independent of weight loss itself.

Importantly, STEP 1 was conducted in adults without established cardiovascular disease. The published STEP 1 results in the NEJM show the heart-rate signal was present but modest, and did not translate into a higher rate of serious cardiac adverse events in that population. That context matters, a slightly faster resting pulse is not the same as cardiac harm.

Does Wegovy make your heart race enough to feel it? For a minority of people, yes. Palpitations (a fluttering, pounding or racing sensation) appear as a listed side effect, and if you want a detailed breakdown of the evidence behind this question, our page on whether Wegovy makes your heart beat faster covers it in full. They tend to be more noticeable after dose increases and often settle as the body adjusts. Keeping the pen in the fridge door as a routine reminder to inject on schedule (rather than skipping and doubling back) helps avoid the erratic dosing patterns that can amplify side effects.

Who needs to take the heart-rate question most seriously

For someone with a healthy heart and no arrhythmia history, a two-to-three-beat-per-minute rise in resting pulse is unlikely to be clinically significant. The picture changes if you have an existing heart rhythm disorder, are taking medicines that already influence heart rate, or if you notice palpitations that feel sustained, fast and irregular rather than a brief flutter.

The NHS guidance on semaglutide advises patients to tell their doctor or pharmacist about all medicines they take before starting, precisely because interactions with heart-rate-affecting drugs (certain antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics, stimulants) can change the clinical picture. A personal history of supraventricular tachycardia or atrial fibrillation is a conversation point, not an automatic bar, but it requires prescriber assessment. People already managing blood sugar levels closely should also be aware that there are separate questions worth exploring, including whether Wegovy can make you diabetic, particularly if diabetes risk is part of your health picture.

There is also a separate cardiac benefit on the other side of the ledger. Long-term obesity carries substantial cardiovascular risk, and semaglutide has demonstrated a reduction in major cardiovascular events in the SELECT trial among adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity. You can read more about that evidence on our page exploring how Wegovy affects the heart overall. The full picture is more nuanced than the headline question suggests.

When a fast heartbeat after Wegovy needs urgent attention

Mild, brief palpitations that arrive after a dose increase and fade within a day or two are the pattern described in clinical trials, common, expected, usually self-limiting. Seek urgent medical advice rather than waiting if you experience any of the following: a heartbeat that races suddenly and does not settle within a few minutes; chest tightness, pain or pressure alongside the palpitations; dizziness, fainting or near-fainting; or breathlessness that is out of proportion to your activity.

These symptoms could indicate something unrelated to Wegovy, but they always warrant same-day assessment. Call 111 or 999 depending on severity. If you experience an unexpected reaction you think may be linked to the medicine, you can also report it directly through the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme, it is open to patients, not just clinicians, and the reports genuinely inform post-market safety monitoring.

For a fuller look at the semaglutide heart-rate signal specifically, our page on whether semaglutide makes your heart race covers the pharmacology in more depth. Getting a proper clinical assessment before starting

No online article can tell you whether your heart rate will increase on Wegovy or whether that increase matters for your individual health, that assessment belongs with a prescriber who can see your full medical history, current medications and cardiac background. It is also the reason these medicines require a prescription. Certain groups require particularly careful prescriber review before starting, and anyone who is pregnant or planning a pregnancy should read our dedicated guidance on Wegovy and pregnancy before proceeding.

At nume, every consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, not an automated system. Cardiac history, current medications and relevant conditions are part of that review. If you are thinking about Wegovy for weight management, or you are already on it and noticing palpitations, you can check whether you are clinically suitable and raise your concerns through a free consultation. You can also explore the full range of licensed weight-loss options on our weight-loss treatments overview. When you are ready, check your eligibility with a free consultation, a prescriber will read your answers the same day.
