No — you cannot buy Wegovy over the counter in the UK. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a Prescription-Only Medicine, which means a qualified prescriber must assess your suitability before it can be legally dispensed. The short answer to where you can buy Wegovy is: through a licensed pharmacy, following a clinical consultation, either via the NHS or a regulated private service. At nume, a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber (a real clinician, not an automated system) reviews your consultation the same day you submit it. If you are clinically suitable, your treatment is dispatched the same day and delivered free the next working day.

How to access Wegovy legally and safely in the UK, step by step

Why can't Wegovy be sold over the counter?

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by mimicking a gut hormone involved in appetite regulation and blood-sugar control. Because it affects cardiovascular function, can interact with other medicines, and carries risks that require professional oversight (including acute pancreatitis and gastrointestinal complications) it is classified as a Prescription-Only Medicine under UK law. That classification exists specifically to ensure a qualified prescriber reviews each person's medical history, weight, existing conditions and current medications before treatment begins.

The MHRA is clear that GLP-1 medicines are not assessed or approved for quick or cosmetic weight loss, and the NHS semaglutide medicines page sets out the clinical framework within which Wegovy is used. Buying it from an unregistered source (a social-media seller, an overseas website, or any outlet dispensing it without a prescription) is not just illegal; it is genuinely dangerous. Fake pens seized by enforcement teams have been found to contain insulin and other substances. The MHRA has warned publicly about counterfeit weight-loss pens on multiple occasions, and its Yellow Card scheme allows anyone to report a suspected counterfeit seller.

If you are wondering whether the same question applies to semaglutide more broadly, our page on buying semaglutide over the counter covers the licensing picture in full.

What is the legal route to getting Wegovy in the UK?

There are two routes: NHS and private. On the NHS, Wegovy is available through specialist weight management services under NICE guidance (TA875), which requires a BMI of 35 or above alongside at least one weight-related health condition, and access is provided within a multidisciplinary programme for a maximum of two years. Waiting lists for those services can be long. Our page on getting Wegovy on the NHS explains the eligibility criteria and what to expect.

The private route is how most people access Wegovy without a wait. A regulated online pharmacy (one you can verify on the GPhC register at pharmacyregulation.org) can offer a clinical consultation, a prescription where appropriate, and dispensing, all in one service. nume's GPhC premises registration number is 9012878, verifiable directly on that register. When you submit a consultation with us, a named prescriber reads it the same day. There is no algorithm making that decision.

The eligibility thresholds for private prescribing follow the licensed indications in the Wegovy SmPC: adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. Lower BMI thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK clinical guidance. BMI alone does not determine approval; the prescriber assesses the full picture.

How do you spot a Wegovy seller that isn't legitimate?

The red flags are consistent. Any seller offering Wegovy, or semaglutide under any brand name, without requiring a consultation and prescription is operating outside UK law. Prices that sit far below anything a licensed pharmacy could offer, discount codes attached to prescription medicines, and orders placed purely through social media platforms are all warning signs the MHRA has flagged repeatedly.

In October 2025, enforcement teams raided the first illicit UK manufacturing site producing counterfeit tirzepatide pens, and across 2025 alone approximately 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines (worth around £45 million) were seized. Those figures give a sense of the scale of the problem. A straightforward check is to search the seller's pharmacy registration number on the GPhC register. If nothing comes up, walk away. If you have purchased from an unverified source, you can report it through the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme.

For more on what a safe purchase actually looks like, the buying Wegovy in the UK page sets out the process in detail, and you can read about the over-the-counter question from a different angle if you came across conflicting information elsewhere.

What happens at a nume, at a nume clinical consultation?

The consultation is free and completed online. You answer a structured medical questionnaire covering your BMI, health conditions, current medicines and relevant history. You then complete a live video weight verification and photo-ID check, part of the safety process that distinguishes a regulated service from an unverified one. Your answers go directly to a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, who reads them personally.

If you are clinically suitable, a prescription is issued and your treatment is dispensed from our pharmacy the same day, provided your order arrives before midday on a working day. It ships with DPD and arrives the next working day, tracked, in plain packaging, the kind of thing that fits easily in a fridge door without drawing anyone's attention. Your prescriber's details are on the prescription. If you have questions after your order arrives, including practical ones such as whether you can buy extra needles for your Wegovy pen, our aftercare team is available seven days a week.

There are no subscriptions and no auto-renewals. Every repeat order goes through a fresh clinical review. You can read more about the full treatment options we offer at our treatment page, or find out more about how our service is structured on our about page. Our clinical team oversees every prescription. If you have questions before starting, the FAQs cover the most common ones, and the contact page is there if you need to speak to someone directly.
