Can you use half a Wegovy pen, or must you inject the full dose?

Why can't you just stop the injection halfway through?

The Wegovy pre-filled pen is engineered to deliver a precise, predetermined dose in a single, continuous press. Once the button is depressed, the mechanism drives the plunger through a fixed distance, that distance is the dose. There is no graduated scale, no stopping point, and no visual indicator that would let you reliably halt at, say, half the volume. Even if you released the button before the pen clicked to confirm completion, you would have no way of knowing how much semaglutide actually entered the tissue versus how much remained in the needle or was lost at the skin surface.

This matters clinically. Semaglutide's once-weekly schedule depends on consistent blood levels building over several weeks of titration. An arbitrary partial dose on one week and a full dose the next creates unpredictable fluctuations that neither you nor your prescriber can account for. Modifying the injection yourself sits outside that guidance and outside what any clinical team could safely supervise.

There is also a practical hygiene concern. Stopping mid-injection, withdrawing the needle, then attempting to re-insert later risks introducing bacteria to the injection site and may compromise the remaining contents of the pen. What should you actually do if the full dose feels like too much?

The titration schedule for Wegovy exists precisely because not everyone moves through the dose steps at the same pace. Starting at 0.25 mg and stepping up roughly every four weeks is a framework, not a rule that overrides how your body is responding. Prescribers can (and regularly do) recommend staying at a lower strength for an extra month or two if nausea, vomiting or other gastrointestinal effects are significant.

Nausea and digestive discomfort are the most commonly reported effects, particularly in the weeks after a dose increase. They are usually temporary, easing as the body adjusts. Could a stinging or incomplete injection be making you feel this way?

Sometimes the impulse to stop an injection early comes not from dose concerns but from a sharp sting or resistance at the skin. That is a separate issue worth addressing on its own terms. Stinging after a Wegovy injection has several well-understood causes: injecting cold medication straight from the fridge, pressing the needle against the skin at the wrong angle, using the same small patch of tissue repeatedly, or a reaction to the formulation itself.

Letting the pen sit at room temperature for around 30 minutes before you use it makes a noticeable difference for many people. Changing the needle before each injection also matters; a blunted tip from a previous use increases both the force needed and the sting. Is there a version of Wegovy that gives you more flexibility over your dose?

Wegovy injections come in five pre-set strengths: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg, with 2.4 mg being the standard maintenance dose. There is now also a 7.2 mg pen, approved by the MHRA in April 2026, which delivers a higher maintenance dose for eligible adults with a BMI of 30 or above. None of these pens are adjustable, they each deliver their fixed amount in full. The flexibility in treatment comes from the titration schedule, not from modifying any individual pen.

The oral semaglutide tablet (Wegovy tablets) follows a different schedule and a different mechanism entirely, but it too has fixed daily doses set by your prescriber.
