Start journey Learn moreMany people taking semaglutide for weight loss worry that losing weight quickly will damage their skin's collagen and leave them with sagging. That concern is understandable, but the picture is more nuanced than the fear suggests. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine; a clinician must assess your suitability before treatment begins. Here is what the evidence and expert guidance actually say about collagen, semaglutide, and skin changes during weight loss.

Search any forum long enough and you'll find someone convinced that semaglutide specifically degrades collagen. It's a persistent idea, and it's not well supported. The NHS medicines guidance for semaglutide does not list collagen loss as a side effect, because the medicine itself has no established direct action on collagen metabolism in the skin.
What does happen is straightforward biology. Skin that has been stretched by a larger body contains existing collagen and elastin arranged under tension. When weight drops, that tension decreases. Skin's ability to remodel and retighten varies enormously between people, age, genetics, how long the weight was carried, and how quickly it comes off all play a role. Faster, larger weight loss (which Wegovy can produce in some people) naturally reduces the time available for gradual remodelling. The medicine is not the agent; the weight change is.
That distinction matters practically, because it means the strategies that protect skin during any significant weight loss apply equally here: prioritising protein, staying well hydrated, incorporating resistance exercise, and giving your skin time. A question our prescribers hear regularly is whether stopping Wegovy early might 'spare' the skin. For most people, a slower rate of loss (achieved by titrating carefully under clinical supervision) is a more sensible lever than abandoning treatment altogether.
Collagen is a protein, specifically, it relies on amino acids including glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, the last of which requires vitamin C for its synthesis. Wegovy works partly by reducing appetite substantially, which is the point. The risk is that the calorie reduction some people achieve is so steep that protein intake falls with it.
Many dietitians advising people on GLP-1 treatment recommend prioritising protein at every meal rather than eating less of everything uniformly. A rough target widely used in clinical practice is around 1.2–1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day during active weight loss, though personal targets should come from your prescriber or a registered dietitian. Adequate vitamin C from fruit and vegetables supports collagen synthesis without supplementation for most people eating a varied diet.
As for collagen supplements themselves, if you want a fuller picture of how semaglutide works as a treatment, that context helps make sense of why the supplement market has grown so quickly around it, but clinical evidence that oral collagen peptides meaningfully increase skin collagen density in humans remains limited and mixed. They are not harmful, but treating them as essential to Wegovy treatment is ahead of the evidence. Focusing on whole-food protein sources and overall dietary quality is the more robustly evidenced approach. Our guide to Wegovy and skin changes covers the broader picture of how skin responds during treatment.
Some people on Wegovy notice skin that feels looser, particularly around the abdomen, upper arms, and thighs, as weight falls. This is normal and expected after significant loss; it is not a sign that something has gone wrong with the medicine. Skin continues to remodel for months after weight stabilises, results at six months do not necessarily reflect how things look at eighteen.
There is also a smaller group of people who report their skin looking better during treatment. Obesity is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, and as weight decreases some inflammatory markers improve. Whether that translates to visible skin quality changes depends on the individual. If you are curious about what Mounjaro and Wegovy have in common as treatments, comparing the two medicines can be a useful starting point for understanding how GLP-1 receptor agonists behave more broadly; claims that semaglutide 'boosts collagen' are not evidence-based at this point.
Worth mentioning separately: if you notice any new rash, unusual bruising, or skin changes at the injection site, let your clinical team know. Injection-site reactions are a documented but generally mild side effect. For anything more unusual, your prescriber is the right first call. People taking Wegovy sometimes ask about other physical changes alongside skin concerns, and some find it helpful to read about why feeling cold is a commonly reported experience for people on Wegovy, as this is another side effect that has its own explanation. Changes in energy and nutrient status during weight loss can be interconnected, B12 levels and semaglutide is one example of a nutritional consideration worth discussing with your prescriber.
If protecting skin quality during weight loss matters to you (and for many people it does, especially after years of carrying extra weight) the good news is that this is entirely compatible with using Wegovy. The approach is not complicated: eat enough protein, include resistance exercise where your health allows, stay hydrated, and let the titration schedule do its job rather than rushing to higher doses before your body has adjusted.
The titration schedule for semaglutide starts at a low dose and increases gradually, which serves multiple purposes. Tolerability is the headline reason, but a steadier rate of weight loss is a side-benefit that many people appreciate in hindsight. If you have specific concerns about skin laxity (for example, if you are planning to lose a substantial amount of weight and are concerned about the outcome) raising this at consultation gives your prescriber context for how to approach your treatment plan. Our clinical team reviews every consultation individually; general questions about managing weight loss well are exactly the kind of thing to raise.
Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, and the NICE appraisal of semaglutide for weight management (TA875) sets out the clinical context in which it is recommended. Understanding that context (and approaching treatment with realistic expectations and a nutrition plan) puts you in the best position to get a result you're happy with, skin included.
