The myth: once you've started injecting, it always has to stay in the fridge

This is probably the most common misunderstanding our prescribers hear about Wegovy. People assume that because the unopened pen lives in the fridge, it must never leave it. That is not quite right. The licensed guidance for semaglutide does allow for a period at room temperature once a pen is in use. What that period is precisely depends on the specific pen format, the original 2.4 mg pre-filled pen and the newer dedicated 7.2 mg single-dose pen each have their own instructions, and these do get updated. The only reliable source is the leaflet inside your own box.

The practical consequence matters. If you are mid-injection course and you take a pen to work, a hotel, or a family member's house, you do not automatically ruin the medicine. You just need to know your exact window and keep track of when the pen left the fridge. Setting a note on your phone the moment you take it out is a habit worth building.

What is not permitted, and what causes real harm to the medicine: freezing. A pen that has frozen (sat against the ice compartment, left in a car overnight in winter) should be discarded. Frozen semaglutide cannot simply be thawed and used. The same applies to any pen that has exceeded its room-temperature window, even if it still looks identical. Appearance tells you nothing.

Fridge storage before first use: the straightforward part

Before the first injection, the rule is simple. Your Wegovy pen arrives from our pharmacy cold, in a DPD-tracked delivery, and it should go straight into the fridge on the day it arrives. Aim for the middle of the fridge rather than the door, door storage means the pen experiences every temperature swing when the fridge opens and closes, and over days that adds up. Between 2°C and 8°C is the target; most domestic fridges sit comfortably within that range if the thermostat has not been knocked.

Do not put the pen in the freezer compartment or directly next to one. Travel is where storage questions become genuinely urgent. For short UK trips, a cool bag with an ice pack (not direct ice contact) keeps an unused pen within range. A brief letter from your prescriber confirming you carry injectable medicine is worth having at security, though it is not always required.

If you are travelling abroad for more than a week or two, your prescriber should know before you go. Depending on the destination, access to refrigeration varies, and the room-temperature window may not stretch across your whole trip.
