Start journey Learn moreDry skin is not listed as a recognised side effect of Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in its UK Summary of Product Characteristics, and clinical trials did not identify it as a common adverse reaction. That said, rapid weight loss and reduced fluid intake — both common on treatment — can affect skin hydration in ways that feel linked to the medicine itself. These are prescription-only medicines requiring a clinical assessment before any prescription is issued; a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews your individual circumstances before treatment begins. If you are experiencing skin changes after starting Mounjaro, this page explains what the evidence does and does not say, and when it is worth raising with your clinical team.

The short answer is no. Tirzepatide's UK licensed side-effect profile, as recorded in the Summary of Product Characteristics, is led by gastrointestinal reactions: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, indigestion and reflux. These were the adverse events that appeared at meaningful frequencies across the SURMOUNT clinical programme. Dry skin as a standalone systemic reaction did not reach a reporting threshold that would place it in the licensed profile. The NHS patient information for tirzepatide reflects the same picture.
Injection-site reactions are listed separately (localised redness, swelling, itching or bruising at the site itself) and these can sometimes be mistaken for a broader skin complaint. They are a different thing entirely, and rotating injection sites (abdomen, thigh, upper arm) usually helps settle them. Our guide to Mounjaro and skin rashes covers that territory in more detail.
None of this means dry skin is impossible. Unlisted reactions do occur, and patient experience across real-world use is broader than what any trial captures. If you want a fuller picture of what Mounjaro dry skin involves, why it happens, and how to manage it, our dedicated guide walks through the evidence in detail. If your skin has noticeably changed since starting treatment, that is worth discussing with your prescriber, not dismissing because it did not appear in a trial table.
The most plausible explanation is indirect rather than pharmacological. Mounjaro slows gastric emptying and significantly reduces appetite; for many people in the early weeks it also reduces thirst. If your fluid intake falls (particularly during a period of nausea or reduced eating) your skin is among the first places that dehydration shows. Lips feel tight, skin looks dull, fine lines seem more pronounced. The medicine has not damaged your skin; your body is running low on the water it needs to maintain it.
A second factor is calorie and nutrient restriction. Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C and E, and adequate protein all contribute to skin barrier function. When appetite drops sharply, so does the variety and volume of food, and skin can suffer as a secondary consequence. This is a general concern with any significant calorie deficit, not specific to tirzepatide.
There is also the weight loss itself. As fat stores reduce, the subcutaneous layer that gives skin its plumpness changes. This is more relevant to questions about loose skin after weight loss on Mounjaro than to classic dryness, but the two can feel related when skin texture changes noticeably.
Finally, seasonal timing matters. Starting treatment in autumn or winter, when central heating and cold air strip skin of moisture, can coincide in a way that looks causal but is not.
The practical steps are genuinely straightforward. Hydration is the first priority: small, frequent sips of water throughout the day tend to be better tolerated than large glasses, especially if nausea is present. Electrolyte drinks or diluted squash can help if plain water feels unappealing. Aiming for pale-yellow urine is a reasonable rule of thumb.
On the nutrition side, not skipping protein and healthy fats despite reduced appetite makes a real difference to how skin recovers. A registered dietitian can help you build a plan that keeps nutrient intake adequate even when portions are small, a conversation worth having if you are finding meals difficult. Our prescribers can point you toward appropriate support as part of aftercare.
Topical moisturisers, applied to damp skin after a shower, are effective at locking in surface hydration. Fragrance-free formulations tend to be better tolerated when skin is already sensitised. If dryness is severe, cracked or spreading to unusual areas, a GP or dermatologist should assess it, that level of change is beyond what Mounjaro's known profile would account for.
On the broader question of how Mounjaro affects the skin, the evidence is reassuring but nuanced, and keeping your clinical team updated when anything changes is always the right call.
Minor dryness that responds to moisturiser and better hydration is unlikely to be urgent. But some skin changes do warrant prompt contact. A widespread or quickly spreading rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing could point to a serious allergic reaction and need immediate medical attention. Our page on tirzepatide and serious allergic reactions covers the warning signs in full.
Beyond that, anything that worsens rather than settles, or that appears alongside other new symptoms, is worth flagging. It is also worth knowing that some people wonder whether Mounjaro causes dry mouth, a related question that shares some of the same hydration-focused explanations and is covered in its own guide. At nume, aftercare is available seven days a week, you are not left to work this out alone between orders. Every prescription is reviewed individually by a named clinician, not a templated workflow, so concerns about side effects go to a real prescriber who knows your history.
You can also report any suspected side effects directly to the MHRA via the Yellow Card scheme, which helps the regulator build a complete picture of real-world experience with newer medicines. Mounjaro carries a Black Triangle (▼) status, meaning additional monitoring is active.
If you have questions about whether Mounjaro is the right option for you, or you want to understand what the clinical review process involves, you can check your eligibility with our prescribers. The consultation is free, and nothing is issued until a clinician has reviewed your full picture.
