Start journey Learn moreWegovy can affect mood in some people, though the picture is more nuanced than a simple yes or no. Most people taking semaglutide report no significant mood changes, but a subset notice shifts in anxiety, low mood, or emotional flatness — and a small number experience more serious psychological symptoms worth knowing about before you start. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine; a qualified prescriber reviews your full health history, including mental health, before treatment can begin.

GLP-1 receptors are not confined to the gut. They exist in several brain regions involved in reward, motivation and emotional regulation, which is one reason researchers and regulators have been paying close attention to mood as a potential side effect of Wegovy and similar medicines. The known side-effect profile of Wegovy is dominated by gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, constipation, indigestion) and those are well-established. Psychological effects are rarer, but they are not theoretical.
In clinical trials and in real-world post-marketing data, a proportion of people reported mood changes including low mood, anxiety, irritability and, in some cases, depressive episodes. The numbers are small relative to the trial populations, but the MHRA takes psychiatric signals seriously with any new medicine under active monitoring. Wegovy carries a Black Triangle (▼) status, meaning the MHRA collects enhanced safety data on it as prescribing widens. That is standard for recently licensed medicines, not a specific red flag, but it does mean reports of mood changes feed directly into ongoing review. If you want a closer look at whether semaglutide affects mood and what the current research shows, that page brings together the evidence in one place. You can also learn more about how Wegovy and mood interact, including what the current evidence shows across its uses.
It is also worth separating direct neurological effects from indirect ones. Significant nausea and appetite suppression, especially in the first few weeks, can disrupt sleep, reduce your enjoyment of food and social eating, and leave you physically fatigued. All of that can dampen mood without any central nervous system involvement at all. Identifying which is which matters, because the responses are different.
The MHRA advises anyone taking a GLP-1 medicine, including Wegovy, to seek urgent medical attention if they experience thoughts of self-harm or suicide, a new or worsening depressive episode, or significant changes in behaviour or mood. This warning appears in the product's Patient Information Leaflet and is reinforced in NHS guidance on the NHS semaglutide medicines page.
People with a current or recent history of severe depression, active suicidal ideation, or significant psychiatric illness were largely excluded from the main Wegovy trials, which is standard trial practice, but it does mean the data on this group is limited. If that applies to you, it does not automatically mean Wegovy is unsuitable, but it does mean the prescriber needs to know. A thorough assessment is not a formality here; it is genuinely the mechanism that keeps treatment safe.
One practical habit worth building: keep a brief daily log for the first few weeks, even just a sentence on your phone about how you feel emotionally. It takes under a minute and gives your prescriber something concrete to work with at your next review, rather than a general impression over weeks. Reports of suspect reactions can also be submitted directly to the MHRA via the Yellow Card scheme, that reporting genuinely shapes ongoing safety review.
The early weeks on Wegovy are often the roughest for physical side effects. Nausea peaks around dose increases, appetite can drop sharply, and some people feel genuinely unwell for a few days after each injection. Feeling low, flat or anxious during this period is common and, for most people, lifts as the body adjusts. That pattern (mood tracking the physical experience rather than sitting independently of it) is a useful signal that what you are feeling is a secondary response to nausea and disrupted eating rather than a direct psychiatric effect.
Nutrition matters here too. Wegovy can suppress appetite so significantly that some people undershoot their protein and calorie intake by a wide margin. Chronic under-eating is a genuine driver of low mood and cognitive fog, and it is something that careful prescribing and aftercare should catch. Our Wegovy overview covers what clinical support during treatment should look like. If mood changes persist beyond the adjustment period, feel independent of how nauseous or tired you are, or worsen over time, those are reasons to contact your prescriber promptly. There is more on the full range of physical side effects on the Wegovy digestive side effects page.
Do not wait until your next scheduled review if your mood is changing noticeably. Contact your prescriber, your GP, or in an emergency, NHS 111. Being on a weight-management medicine does not mean you have to accept feeling psychologically worse, and a good clinical team will not brush concerns off. Prescribers can adjust the dose, pause treatment, or refer you onward depending on what they find.
If you are considering starting Wegovy and you have questions about mental health and suitability, that conversation belongs in the consultation, not as an afterthought. A prescriber who reviews your mental health history carefully before approving treatment is doing exactly what they should. If you want to understand whether Wegovy can change your mood and what the evidence says, there is more context to help you decide. For people exploring all available treatment options, the weight-loss treatment overview explains what is licensed in the UK and how private prescribing works. When you are ready to speak to someone clinical, starting a free consultation with our prescribers is the straightforward next step.
