Start journey Learn moreHair loss is one of the side effects women on Wegovy ask about most, and the honest answer is: yes, some women do notice hair shedding during treatment, but it is almost never caused by the medicine itself. The medical term is telogen effluvium, and it is triggered by rapid weight loss rather than semaglutide's pharmacology — a distinction that changes how you think about it and what, if anything, you can do. As a prescription-only medicine, Wegovy requires clinical assessment before you start, and side effects including changes to hair are part of the conversation our prescribers have with every patient.

Most accounts you'll read online frame hair loss as a straightforward drug side effect, as if semaglutide is travelling to the scalp and switching follicles off. That picture is misleading. The NHS patient information for semaglutide lists hair loss as an uncommon effect, but clinical pharmacologists largely attribute it to nutritional and physiological stress rather than the molecule's direct action. Wegovy works by reducing appetite substantially, which means some people eat far less than their body needs over a short period. That calorie deficit, especially when protein falls short, pushes a larger-than-usual proportion of hair follicles into the resting phase simultaneously. Two to four months later, those resting hairs shed together, and the timing coincides with being on Wegovy, so the medicine gets the blame.
This matters because the framing changes the response. If you're losing hair because of rapid weight loss, managing the rate of loss and keeping protein intake adequate addresses the root cause. Stopping the medicine does not necessarily stop the shedding immediately; conversely, the shedding often resolves on its own once the body adapts, even if you carry on with treatment. Worth knowing before drawing conclusions from a six-week snapshot.
You can find a broader overview of what women specifically report on Wegovy side effects in women, including how hormonal differences may shape tolerability.
In the STEP 1 trial (68 weeks, over a thousand adults with obesity) published in the New England Journal of Medicine, hair loss was reported in roughly 3% of participants receiving semaglutide 2.4mg versus around 1% on placebo. That gap is real and it does suggest some contribution from the medicine or its effects, but it also means the large majority of participants did not report it. The events recorded were generally mild and transient. If you want to understand whether semaglutide causes hair loss directly, or whether the shedding is better explained by the rapid weight change it drives, our dedicated page works through the evidence carefully. If you want to understand what the evidence says about whether the drug itself plays a direct role, our page on whether Wegovy causes hair loss works through the question carefully, including what can be attributed to the medicine versus the weight loss it produces. Our Wegovy overview sets out what the licensed schedule looks like and what the clinical programme showed about average weight loss, which gives useful context for understanding why rapid change can stress the body.
The single most consistent piece of advice from dietitians working alongside weight-loss programmes is to protect protein. Adults on a significant calorie deficit should aim to distribute protein across three meals rather than concentrating it at dinner. You don't need a tracking app to do a rough check: hold your hand flat and look at your palm, a serving of protein-rich food roughly that size at each meal is a simple visual guide you can apply in under a minute at any mealtime.
Iron, zinc, and B vitamins also support hair growth; if you're eating a narrower range of foods because appetite has dropped sharply, a basic multivitamin and a diet with variety help cover the gaps. Hairstyling habits matter too: tight styles and heat put mechanical stress on already-vulnerable shafts during a shedding phase, and loosening both reduces breakage even if it doesn't shorten the effluvium itself.
If you want to explore the full picture of hair changes reported across the evidence base, our dedicated page on Wegovy and hair loss goes into greater depth. For women who have noticed shedding and want to understand how their experience compares with what others report, our page on Wegovy and hair loss in women looks at the patterns specific to female users, including the factors that may make women more susceptible.
Most Wegovy-related hair shedding is diffuse (spread evenly across the scalp), temporary, and resolves without treatment. These situations warrant a GP or prescriber review rather than a wait-and-see approach: shedding that is patchy rather than diffuse; loss from eyebrows or lashes; loss that begins before any significant weight change has occurred; shedding that continues or worsens beyond six months; or scalp pain, itching, or visible skin changes accompanying the hair loss. These patterns suggest something other than telogen effluvium (thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency anaemia, or alopecia areata, for example) that needs investigation in its own right.
If you believe hair loss is a side effect of your treatment, you can report it directly through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. Reporting doesn't mean stopping treatment; it helps regulators build a clearer picture of how medicines perform in real-world use. Our prescribers discuss side effects like this as part of every consultation, and the conversation doesn't end at the prescription, aftercare is part of what we offer. If you have concerns mid-treatment, our team is available seven days a week; you can reach us via our support page.
If you're weighing up whether Wegovy is the right fit for your circumstances, starting a free consultation is the place to begin, a GPhC-registered prescriber reads your answers the same day and discusses suitability, including any side effects relevant to your medical history.
