Start journey Learn moreHiccups are an unusual but real side effect that some people notice on Wegovy. They tend to show up early in treatment, often after a meal, and are linked to how semaglutide slows the movement of food through your stomach. Most people find them brief and manageable rather than distressing. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, so any side effects you experience are worth discussing with your prescriber — they can help you work out what's driving them and whether anything needs adjusting.

Wegovy works partly by slowing gastric emptying, food lingers in the stomach longer than it normally would. That's deliberate; it's one of the reasons you feel full for longer. But a fuller, more distended stomach can irritate the diaphragm, the dome-shaped muscle sitting just beneath it. When the diaphragm spasms, you hiccup.
This is why hiccups on Wegovy tend to appear after meals rather than randomly throughout the day. They're more common during the early weeks of treatment, or after a dose increase, when the stomach is adjusting to a new pace. The Wegovy overview covers how the medicine works more broadly if you want the fuller picture.
It's also worth knowing that nausea, bloating, burping and hiccups often travel together for the same underlying reason. If you're curious whether related symptoms are part of the picture, the guide to Wegovy and wind goes into that in more detail.
Before reaching for a glass of water or holding your breath, pause and think back to your last meal. Did you eat faster than usual? Did you have more than you intended, despite feeling full partway through? Both happen more than people expect on Wegovy: appetite signals can arrive late, and eating pace doesn't always adjust automatically.
A quick habit worth building is to put your fork or spoon down between mouthfuls. That's it. It sounds almost too simple, but people on GLP-1 medicines often find that slowing down physically gives the satiety signal time to register before they've overfilled the stomach.
Eating smaller portions more frequently, staying upright for at least 30 minutes after a meal, and avoiding carbonated drinks with food can all help reduce diaphragm irritation. None of these are formal medical advice (your prescriber can give you personalised guidance) but they're practical adjustments that many people find useful during the first few weeks. You can also read about dry mouth on Wegovy, another symptom linked to the medicine's effect on digestion and eating patterns.
Most hiccups on Wegovy are short-lived and stop on their own. They are not listed among the common adverse effects in the official semaglutide patient information, but gastrointestinal symptoms as a class are the most frequently reported side effects of this medicine, nausea affects a significant proportion of people, particularly early on.
The NHS semaglutide medicines page lists the GI side effects to watch for, and it's a useful reference for distinguishing normal adjustment symptoms from ones that warrant a call to your prescriber or GP.
Seek medical help promptly if: hiccups are persistent and lasting more than 48 hours; they're accompanied by severe or persistent stomach pain (particularly pain that radiates toward the back); or you're vomiting to the point where you can't keep fluids down. The MHRA highlighted acute pancreatitis as a known side effect of GLP-1 medicines in a safety update in January 2026, the key symptom to watch for is severe, persistent abdominal pain, sometimes reaching the back. Hiccups alone don't signal this, but hiccups plus that kind of pain do warrant urgent attention. You can report suspected side effects via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme if you experience something unexpected.
If you're not sure whether what you're experiencing is normal adjustment or something to act on, the easiest step is to contact your prescriber. At nume, our clinical team is available seven days a week, our clinical oversight page explains how that works. And if you're still in the early stages of deciding whether Wegovy is right for you, the weight-loss treatment overview sets out what's available and how the assessment process works. If you've recently started treatment, our guide to administering Wegovy correctly can help you make sure each dose is going in as it should.
