Does Wegovy Make You Itch — and Should You Be Concerned?

Step one: working out where the itch is coming from

The starting point is location. Itching that appears within minutes to an hour of your injection, right where the needle went in, fits the pattern of a normal injection-site reaction. Semaglutide is injected subcutaneously (just beneath the skin) and the surrounding tissue can respond with a brief inflammatory response: redness, a small raised area, warmth, or itching. This typically clears within an hour or two. It tends to improve as the body adjusts to the medication.

There is one misconception worth clearing up gently here: some people assume that any itch after starting Wegovy must mean the medicine is not genuine or has been contaminated. That is not how semaglutide skin reactions work, mild localised itching is documented in the licensed medicine's clinical data and says nothing about product quality.

Step two: monitoring the pattern over the first few doses

A useful practical sequence, based on what prescribers commonly advise, is to note three things each time itching occurs: where it is, when it starts relative to the injection, and how long it lasts. That pattern tells you and your prescriber a great deal. Step three: recognising the signs that need immediate action

The vast majority of Wegovy-associated skin reactions are a minor inconvenience. However, a small number of people develop a genuine hypersensitivity response, and the signs are distinct from ordinary itching. Seek emergency help immediately if you notice widespread hives or a raised, blotchy rash spreading beyond the injection site, swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a feeling of dizziness or collapse. These features can indicate anaphylaxis (a rare but serious allergic reaction) and require urgent medical assessment, not a call to the pharmacy.

At a less urgent level, persistent itching that lasts more than a few days, or a rash that spreads, worsens or blisters, warrants a same-day GP call rather than waiting for your next scheduled review. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine for good reason: its side-effect profile, including skin reactions, is managed within an ongoing clinical relationship, not independently. Does semaglutide cause itching differently at different doses?

Skin reactions, including itching, are slightly more likely after dose increases, the same pattern seen with other GLP-1 side effects. The first few days after moving from 1.7mg to the 2.4mg maintenance dose, for example, are when some people report a brief resurgence of symptoms they thought had settled. This is consistent with the dose-dependent pharmacology of semaglutide and typically settles within a week or two.
