Start journey Learn moreWhen you start Wegovy, certain foods can make side effects noticeably worse — particularly nausea, reflux and vomiting that are already common in the early weeks of treatment. High-fat meals, very sugary foods and large portion sizes top the list of what most people find difficult to tolerate on semaglutide. This page draws on NHS guidance on semaglutide to give you a clear, practical picture. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine; what works for your eating pattern is something a prescriber and, ideally, a dietitian can tailor to you personally — but the information below applies to most people on treatment.

Semaglutide works partly by slowing the rate at which food leaves your stomach. That's useful for appetite control, but it means any food that is already slow to digest (think a large portion of chips, a creamy curry or a full English) can sit heavily and trigger nausea, burping or reflux that goes on for hours. The stomach isn't emptying quickly enough to stay comfortable.
Most people notice this most sharply in the first few weeks of treatment, or after a dose increase, when the body is still adjusting. The common side effects reported in Wegovy trials (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion) are rarely random. There's nearly always a dietary pattern behind a bad day. The NHS medicines page for semaglutide notes that eating smaller portions and avoiding rich or spicy food can help manage these effects.
It's also worth knowing that Wegovy suppresses appetite significantly. Eating to your old portion sizes when your stomach is already slowed is a reliable recipe for discomfort. Smaller, simpler meals tend to be far easier to get through, especially in the early months. See our page on the foods most people find easiest to eat on Wegovy for the positive flip side of this picture.
Fatty and fried foods consistently top the list. A takeaway, a heavily buttered dish, anything deep-fried, the fat content slows digestion even before semaglutide's effect is added on top. The combination can leave you nauseous for the rest of the evening.
Sugary foods and drinks are the second major category. Very sweet items (fizzy drinks, sweets, pastries with high-sugar fillings) can cause rapid blood-sugar shifts that land as dizziness, fatigue or a shaky, unsettled feeling, particularly if you're eating less protein than usual. They also tend to sit uneasily on a slowed stomach.
Spicy foods are harder to predict: some people tolerate them fine, others find they aggravate reflux and indigestion sharply. If you've always been fine with spice, keep an eye on it rather than cutting it entirely, but reduce portions at first.
Alcohol deserves a specific note. Wegovy doesn't interact with alcohol in a pharmacological sense, but many people find their tolerance drops considerably on treatment, even a couple of glasses can cause nausea or make the next morning uncomfortable. It's also high in empty calories, which works against the purpose of treatment. Our what to eat on Wegovy guide covers how to think about drinks alongside food choices.
Finally, large meals of any composition. This is less about what you eat and more about how much. A huge plate of something relatively healthy can still cause bloating and reflux when gastric emptying is slowed.
For many people, yes. The tolerability challenges tend to be sharpest at the 0.25mg and 0.5mg starting steps, then settle as the body adjusts. By the time patients reach maintenance doses, most have naturally shifted to smaller, simpler meals, not always by choice, but because that's what feels comfortable.
That said, dose increases often temporarily bring back some of the early nausea, so it's worth revisiting your eating habits each time your prescriber moves you up. If you want a detailed breakdown of which foods to avoid while on Wegovy, our dedicated page covers what to sidestep at each stage of treatment. Semaglutide-specific food guidance expands on how the advice can shift across the titration schedule.
Protein matters more as the doses rise. Wegovy reduces appetite without distinguishing between protein and other nutrients, and many people accidentally under-eat protein. This accelerates lean muscle loss alongside fat. Prioritising protein at each meal (even small ones) is something the NHS England guidance on weight management injections specifically highlights for people on GLP-1 medicines.
No specific foods are clinically contraindicated with semaglutide in the way that, say, grapefruit interacts with statins. The concerns are about tolerability and symptom management rather than pharmacological interactions.
The practical picture for most people comes down to three habits: keeping portions modest, keeping fat content moderate, and not drinking alcohol on a stomach that's already processing a meal. Caffeine on an empty stomach is another common trigger for nausea, especially in the morning, something worth bearing in mind if your Wegovy injection day falls on a morning when you're used to coffee before breakfast.
If you're thinking about how this sits alongside a wider cost and treatment question, our page on Wegovy pricing in the UK addresses what's included in a legitimate private prescription. For the broader picture of eating well on treatment, what to eat when taking Wegovy runs through the foods that actively support your results. And if you'd like a prescriber to review your suitability for Wegovy and talk through how to manage treatment alongside your diet, you can start a free consultation with the nume clinical team, reviewed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, typically the same day.
