How Wegovy is dispensed: pens, prescriptions and what to expect

The myth: Wegovy arrives like any supplement, order, pay, collect

The single biggest misconception about how Wegovy is dispensed is that it works like an over-the-counter product. Type the name into a search engine and you will find sellers suggesting the process is almost that simple. It is not. Wegovy is classified as a Prescription-Only Medicine under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, which means a registered prescriber must personally assess your suitability before any pharmacy can lawfully dispense it. That assessment is not a formality. It covers your medical history, current medicines, weight-related conditions, BMI, and whether this specific treatment is appropriate for you at this point. Anyone offering the pen without that step is operating outside UK law.

This matters practically because counterfeit pens (including fake semaglutide products) have been seized in large quantities by the MHRA. Some contained insulin instead of semaglutide, which is genuinely dangerous. The MHRA Yellow Card scheme allows you to report suspect sellers, and checking any pharmacy on the GPhC register takes about 30 seconds. If a seller is not on it, stop.

What the pen itself looks like, and the dispensing schedule behind it

Once legitimately prescribed, Wegovy is dispensed as a pre-filled injection pen. Each pen holds four individually capped needles and delivers one weekly dose. The standard titration pathway runs 0.25 mg (weeks 1–4), 0.5 mg (weeks 5–8), 1.0 mg (weeks 9–12), 1.7 mg (weeks 13–16), then 2.4 mg as the long-term maintenance dose, though your prescriber controls every step. The MHRA also approved a 7.2 mg maintenance dose in January 2026, with a dedicated single-dose pen confirmed on 14 April 2026 for adults with a BMI of 30 or above. Pens are dispensed one at a time or in small batches, depending on the prescribing model. Pens are refrigerated throughout storage and must be kept between 2 °C and 8 °C; the Patient Information Leaflet specifies the exact window for using a pen at room temperature, and that leaflet takes precedence. Where Wegovy can and cannot be dispensed in the UK

Wegovy is available through two routes in the UK. On the NHS, it is dispensed via specialist weight management services under NICE guidance (TA875), which requires a multidisciplinary programme and is limited to a maximum of two years. The private route runs through registered online pharmacies and private clinics. For the dispensing to be lawful, the pharmacy must appear on the GPhC register and the prescription must come from a registered prescriber who has genuinely assessed you. It is also worth knowing what Wegovy is not. Ozempic is the same active ingredient (semaglutide) but licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight management. Rybelsus is oral semaglutide, again for diabetes. The only version dispensed for weight loss is Wegovy, in the strengths described above. Safe disposal once you have finished a pen

Dispensing does not end when the pen is empty. Used Wegovy pens (needles attached) are clinical waste and must go into an approved sharps container, not a household bin. Most pharmacies, including those dispensing privately, will advise on this.
