How Long Can You Store Wegovy in the Fridge — and What Happens If You Don't?

Unopened Wegovy pens belong in the fridge at 2–8°C; correct temperature matters throughout the pen's shelf life, not just occasionally.
Once a pen has been used for the first time, the clock starts on how long it can be kept (refrigerated or at room temperature) before it must be discarded, per the SmPC.
Wegovy should never be frozen; a pen that has been frozen must not be used, even if it looks undamaged.
If you are ever unsure whether a pen has been stored correctly, the safest step is to contact your prescriber or pharmacist rather than inject and hope for the best.

Wegovy (semaglutide) pens must be kept refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C until you are ready to use them; an unopened pen stored correctly will remain usable until the expiry date printed on the label. Once you have used the first dose, the same pen can be kept in the fridge or at room temperature — but the window at room temperature is limited, and the Patient Information Leaflet gives the exact figures you should follow. This page walks through storage in practical order, from the moment your delivery arrives to the moment you pick up the pen for your weekly injection, so you know what to check and when to act.

Step-by-step: storing Wegovy from delivery to injection day

Step 1, the moment your pen arrives: check the packaging and get it into the fridge

Your Wegovy pen will arrive in a cool-packed, plain outer box. As soon as it reaches you, check the expiry date on the label and move the pen into the main body of your fridge, not the door shelf, where temperatures fluctuate every time the fridge opens. The target range is 2°C to 8°C, which is the normal cold-storage zone of a domestic fridge.

A common misconception is that the fridge door is fine for medicines because it is still cold enough. In practice, the door sits briefly above 8°C during each opening cycle, and repeated exposure shortens effective storage life even if the pen looks identical afterwards. Tucking the pen towards the back of a middle shelf is the practical habit worth building from day one.

Keep the pen in its inner carton between uses; this protects the pen from light, which can degrade semaglutide over time. The Wegovy SmPC on the eMC is the definitive source for precise storage durations, far more reliable than anything circulating on social media. For the fuller context of what can and cannot go wrong with semaglutide storage, our guide to whether Wegovy needs to be refrigerated covers the underlying reasons in more detail.

Step 2, between weekly injections: refrigerated storage is the default

Each Wegovy pen delivers four weekly doses. Between injections, the pen goes straight back into the fridge. This is where many people do the right thing instinctively but worry unnecessarily: as long as the pen returns to 2–8°C promptly after each use, the next three doses are not compromised.

Do not store the pen near the freezer compartment or against the rear wall of the fridge if ice forms there. Freezing is not a minor inconvenience, a frozen and thawed pen must be discarded, because the formulation is damaged in ways that are invisible to the naked eye. There is no reliable home test to tell whether a frozen pen has recovered; the MHRA is clear that these medicines must come through a verified, temperature-controlled supply chain for precisely this reason.

If you are travelling and wondering how long the pen can manage outside the fridge, that is a closely related but separate question, and our page on how long Wegovy can be out of the fridge addresses it specifically, including the room-temperature time limit from the SmPC.

Step 3, approaching the expiry date or the end of a pen: what to check

The expiry date on an unopened Wegovy pen is the outer limit for refrigerated storage, and if you want a clear answer on how long Wegovy can stay in the fridge, our dedicated page sets out the figures from the SmPC alongside the practical factors that affect them. Do not use a pen past that date even if it has been kept at the correct temperature throughout. Inside a pen that has been started, the relevant figure is the in-use storage period stated in the Patient Information Leaflet, the clock runs from the date of first use, not from the expiry date on the box.

Check the solution in the pen window before each injection: it should be clear and colourless to slightly yellow, with no particles or cloudiness. Any change in appearance is a reason to stop and contact your prescriber. The NHS medicines page for semaglutide outlines what to look for and when to seek advice, and it is worth reading alongside the leaflet that comes in the box.

Needle changes are also part of good pen hygiene: always attach a fresh needle immediately before injecting and remove it straight afterwards. Compatible replacement needles are available from our pharmacy if you need to restock. After removing the needle, recap and dispose of it promptly in a sharps container, never in household waste.

For a broader look at Wegovy, including what the treatment involves and how private access works in the UK, our Wegovy overview page is a good starting point. If storage questions come up during treatment, our pages on how long you can store Wegovy and on how long you can store semaglutide in the fridge give detailed, up-to-date guidance you can refer back to at any point. If you would like a prescriber's view on your specific situation, our clinical team is available seven days a week. And if you are still working out whether Wegovy might be right for you, checking your eligibility through a free consultation is the natural next step.
