How long can you store Mounjaro in the fridge?

The misconception worth clearing up first: the expiry date on the box is not the same as your storage window

The most common misunderstanding our prescribers come across is that people treat the expiry date as though it only starts counting once the pen leaves the pharmacy. It doesn't. The expiry date printed on your Mounjaro KwikPen is set from the date of manufacture. Refrigerated storage at 2–8°C is the condition under which the medicine remains stable until that printed date, not beyond it.

That distinction matters in practice. If you order a pen with an expiry date several months away and then keep it correctly refrigerated, you have until that date. If a pen arrives with only a few weeks left on the label, you have a few weeks. The fridge doesn't extend the shelf life; it preserves what remains of it. Always check the label when your delivery arrives. It takes under a minute: date on the pen, date on the outer carton, same number.

How fridge temperature actually affects the medicine, and what to avoid

Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, is a peptide. Peptides are sensitive to temperature extremes in both directions. Too warm and the molecule degrades; too cold and freezing can damage the formulation irreversibly. The 2–8°C refrigerator range is specifically chosen to sit clear of both risks.

Practically, that means storing the pen in the body of the fridge rather than the door, where temperature fluctuates each time you open it. Keep it away from the freezer compartment and any ice packs. Do not place it against the back wall if your fridge tends to ice over near the coils. What is consistent across guidance: once a pen has been kept at room temperature for longer than the leaflet permits, it should be discarded even if unused. One practical note on injection technique: if your pen has been in the fridge, letting it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before injecting can make the injection more comfortable.
