Start journey Learn moreA single semaglutide pen contains four weekly doses, so it lasts four weeks. That applies to every standard Wegovy strength (from the 0.25 mg starter right up to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose) because each pen is pre-filled with four injections, one per week. As a prescription-only medicine, Wegovy requires a clinical assessment and an active prescription before it can be supplied; how long your pen physically lasts once it leaves the fridge is a separate (and practical) question, and one worth understanding properly before you start treatment. Our clinical team at nume fields this question regularly, so here is a clear, factual answer.

Every pre-filled Wegovy pen is designed for exactly four weekly injections. One pen, four doses, four weeks. That's the unit, and it's the same regardless of which strength you're on during your titration schedule. So when patients ask how long a semaglutide pen lasts, the straightforward answer is: one pen per month, though "month" here means 28 days of weekly injections rather than a calendar month.
There is a common misconception worth clearing up gently: some people assume that because the pen is a solid device with a plunger, a smaller person or a lower dose might stretch it to five or six injections. It won't. Each dose is pre-set by the pen's mechanism; there is no adjustable dial, and no residual medicine is accessible after the fourth injection. The pen is engineered to deliver exactly what the prescriber and manufacturer have calibrated for your strength. If you're curious about how long 1 pen of Wegovy lasts and why a fifth dose simply isn't possible, our dedicated page walks through the mechanics in detail.
For a fuller picture of how Wegovy's titration schedule works (from 0.25 mg through to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose) the Wegovy overview on our site covers the licensed UK pathway in plain language.
Wegovy must be stored in a refrigerator at 2–8°C before first use. This is non-negotiable for preserving the medicine's stability. Once you take a pen out of the fridge, you enter the room-temperature window, and this is where people sometimes go wrong.
The refrigerator storage rules for semaglutide are set out precisely in the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your pen. We deliberately do not quote a specific number of days here, because the window differs between products and strengths, and quoting a general figure risks someone relying on the wrong one. Read your leaflet. If you have lost it, the Wegovy SmPC is published on the electronic Medicines Compendium, your pharmacist can point you to it, or you can ask our prescribers directly.
Key practical points: keep the pen out of direct sunlight; do not leave it in a hot car; never freeze it. A pen that has been frozen, even briefly, should not be used. Our page on how long a Wegovy pen lasts covers both the refrigerated life and the room-temperature window together, so you can see exactly where the limits apply. The NHS semaglutide page outlines storage and handling guidance in patient-friendly terms and is worth bookmarking.
After your fourth injection, the pen is empty and should be treated as clinical waste. Used pens contain a needle (covered by the pen cap after use) and traces of medicine, they should not go into your household recycling or general bin.
The correct route is a yellow sharps container. These are small, rigid, sealed boxes designed for exactly this purpose. If you need one, our pharmacy can supply a sharps container alongside your treatment. Many GP practices and some community pharmacies also offer sharps disposal services free of charge, worth asking locally.
Never re-cap a used needle by hand; the auto-cover mechanism on the Wegovy pen is designed to protect you after each injection. Once all four doses are done, put the whole pen in your sharps container and return it to a local collection point. This protects others (including waste collection workers and children who might find a bin bag) as well as the environment.
Life happens. A pen gets left out too long, or a dose is skipped. These situations come up regularly, and the right response is not to improvise.
If you miss a dose, follow the guidance in your Patient Information Leaflet and contact your prescriber if you are unsure whether to take it late or simply skip to the next scheduled day. Do not double up. If you suspect a pen has been compromised (stored incorrectly, dropped and damaged, or the solution looks cloudy or discoloured when it should be clear) do not inject it. Contact your pharmacy. Our prescribers are available for aftercare queries seven days a week.
For context on how Wegovy fits into a broader treatment programme, the weight loss treatment overview explains how semaglutide works alongside diet and activity changes. And if you're weighing up what private treatment involves from a cost perspective, the Wegovy pricing page sets out what a single transparent price covers at nume, consultation, prescription, delivery and ongoing clinical support included. A new prescription is clinically reviewed before every repeat order, so your prescriber keeps an eye on how treatment is going at each stage.
The ingredients and formulation page goes into more detail about what is actually inside the pen if you'd like to understand the medicine better before starting. Semaglutide is a prescription-only medicine, and starting treatment is a clinical decision made with a qualified prescriber, not something to piece together from online estimates alone. If you're ready to take that step, start your free consultation and our prescribers will assess whether Wegovy is right for you.
