How many clicks are in a 10mg Mounjaro pen?

Each 10mg Mounjaro KwikPen holds exactly four weekly doses at the 10mg strength.
One injection = one click held down until the yellow indicator shows the dose is complete, then held for a further ten seconds against the skin.
The pen does not require you to count multiple clicks to reach a dose, the mechanism delivers one full dose per button press.
Once all four doses are used, the pen is empty and should be disposed of in an approved sharps container; never attempt to reuse it.

A 10mg Mounjaro KwikPen contains four doses — one per week for four weeks — and each dose is delivered by pressing the button until you hear and feel a single click, then holding for ten seconds. The click count per injection is one; the pen's four doses are what make it a four-week supply. These are prescription-only medicines assessed on an individual basis by a clinical prescriber, so the right dose and injection technique for you is confirmed through that clinical process rather than a general guide.

What the 10mg pen's click mechanism actually means in practice

You're holding a new pen and wondering what 'one click' actually means

You've just collected a 10mg Mounjaro pen for the first time and the instruction leaflet mentions a click. It's a reasonable thing to want to understand before you inject. The click on the Mounjaro KwikPen is a confirmation signal, not a counting mechanism, you press the orange button down firmly, hear a single click as the injection begins, and keep pressing until the yellow indicator has fully advanced in the window. Then you hold the pen in place for a full ten seconds before removing it. That ten-second hold is what completes the dose.

Contrast this with some insulin devices or older injection pens where users dial up multiple clicks to reach a dose. The Mounjaro KwikPen works differently. If you want to understand how many clicks are involved in a 10mg Mounjaro dose, the short answer is that the dose is pre-set and sealed into the pen by the manufacturer, Eli Lilly. There is no dialling, no counting to four or six clicks, no risk of taking a partial dose by pressing too lightly. Press once, hold, and the pen does the rest. The yellow indicator moving fully across the window is your confirmation the dose is complete, that matters more than the click itself.

If the indicator hasn't moved fully, do not press again or assume you've had a double dose. The NHS tirzepatide patient information advises checking the indicator window rather than re-injecting if you are unsure; your prescriber or pharmacist can walk you through this in more detail.

Four doses per pen: how the 10mg pen fits into your treatment

Each 10mg Mounjaro pen contains enough medicine for exactly four once-weekly injections. That aligns with a four-week supply, which is the standard monthly prescribing cycle. When the fourth injection is done, the pen locks and cannot be used again. This is a deliberate safety feature.

A question our prescribers hear most weeks is whether a partially used pen from a previous dose strength can be topped up or switched mid-pen. It cannot. Each pen is a sealed, single-strength device. If your prescriber has moved you from 7.5mg to 10mg, you start a fresh 10mg pen from injection one, the 7.5mg pen's remaining doses are discarded safely.

Treatment at 10mg follows the standard titration schedule set by your prescriber. The schedule itself (how long you stay at each dose and whether you move higher) is a clinical decision. If you're curious how injection volumes compare across doses, our page on how many ml each Mounjaro dose delivers explains that part of the pen's design.

Used pens should go straight into a sharps container. You can find a 1-litre sharps container if you need one, and your local council or pharmacy will advise on collection.

The numbers behind the pen: what four doses means for storage and planning

Knowing there are four doses in the pen matters practically, not just technically. The pen needs to be kept refrigerated at 2–8°C until you open it. Once in use, there is a limited window during which it can be kept at room temperature, the exact duration is stated in the Patient Information Leaflet inside the box, and that leaflet is your reference, not a general website. Every pen batch carries its own expiry date, printed on the label.

For planning, a single 10mg pen is a full month's supply. Running out mid-month means your next prescription needs to be ready. At nume, prescriptions are reviewed before every repeat order, a real prescriber checks that continuing treatment is appropriate, not an automated renewal. Ordering before 12pm on a working day means your pen can be dispatched the same day and delivered the next working day by DPD.

The Mounjaro SmPC on the eMC gives the full technical detail on storage windows, dose preparation and disposal. If you've come here because you're considering starting Mounjaro rather than already using it, our Mounjaro treatment overview covers eligibility and what the process looks like from the start.

When clicking feels different, and what to do

Occasionally, people report that the button felt stiff, that they didn't hear a click, or that the yellow indicator only moved part way. These aren't reasons to panic, but they do need attention. A few practical points based on what the clinical guidance recommends:

Let the pen reach room temperature before injecting, pressing a cold pen is harder and can feel incomplete. If the pen was taken straight from the fridge, waiting up to 30 minutes helps. If the indicator has not fully advanced after a properly held injection, don't inject again at the same time; instead, contact your prescriber or pharmacist the same day for guidance. Never shake, tap, or try to force the pen mechanically.

Injection sites for Mounjaro are the abdomen, outer thigh or upper arm. Rotating the site each week reduces the chance of skin changes that can affect absorption. Cleaning the site first with an alcohol swab is recommended before each injection.

If anything about your technique or your pen's behaviour is leaving you uncertain, the right place to raise it is with the clinical team who prescribed for you. Our prescribers are available seven days a week for aftercare queries, and patients who want to understand exactly how many clicks are in a 5mg Mounjaro pen or need to know how many clicks on a 10mg pen deliver a 5mg dose can find those details in our dedicated guides. You can reach us through the contact page. And if you're not yet on treatment and are thinking about starting, speaking to our prescribers is the first step.
