How many days can Wegovy be left unrefrigerated safely?

Wegovy pens can tolerate room temperature (up to 30°C) for a cumulative maximum of 28 days, per the licensed product information.
Once that 28-day room-temperature period ends, the pen must not go back into the fridge — it should be discarded safely.
Pens that have frozen, been left in direct sunlight, or exceeded 30°C should not be used regardless of how much time has passed.
Your Patient Information Leaflet and the product SmPC are the authoritative source for exact storage windows, always check them first.

Wegovy (semaglutide) can be kept at room temperature for up to 28 days once removed from the fridge, provided it stays below 30°C and is protected from light. That 28-day window applies to a single pen that has already been taken out of refrigerated storage — after which, any unused doses must be discarded. These medicines are prescription-only, so storage guidance applies to people already in a supervised clinical programme. The exact instructions for your specific pen are set out in the Patient Information Leaflet and the Wegovy SmPC on the eMC, which are the definitive references for storage detail.

Wegovy storage step by step: from the fridge to your injection day

Step 1 (keeping the pen in the fridge until you need it

Wegovy pens are dispatched from a GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging) yours will arrive via DPD with a tracking notification, in a plain, unbranded box. Inside, the pen should go straight into the fridge at 2–8°C, stored upright and away from the back wall where it might freeze. The fridge is the default home for every Wegovy pen you're not actively using.

Do not put a pen in the freezer, even briefly. A pen that has frozen is no longer usable. Keep it away from the ice compartment and from any vents that could push cold air unevenly. These are practical fridge habits worth forming from day one, before the question of room-temperature storage ever comes up. The how long Wegovy can stay refrigerated guide covers the fridge-storage limits in more detail.

Step 2, taking the pen out and understanding the 28-day window

Once a Wegovy pen is removed from the fridge, the clock starts. The licensed product information allows up to 28 days at room temperature, so long as that temperature stays below 30°C. That is the figure to carry in your head: 28 days, under 30°C. It is not per dose; it runs from the moment the pen first leaves refrigeration, whether you have injected once or not at all.

That window matters most during travel, at work, or whenever your fridge isn't accessible. For anyone planning a longer trip, travelling with Wegovy unrefrigerated has practical guidance on keeping the pen within limits on the move. Warm car dashboards, sunny windowsills and the inside of a coat pocket in high summer can all push the temperature above 30°C faster than you might expect, the ambient temperature isn't the same as the surface temperature in direct sun.

Also worth knowing: time out of the fridge is cumulative. If you take the pen out for three days, put it back, then take it out again, the total counts toward the 28-day limit. The full guide to how long Wegovy lasts unrefrigerated covers the cumulative-time question specifically.

Step 3, what to do at the end of the 28 days

When 28 days at room temperature have passed, the pen should be discarded, even if doses remain in it. Once that window closes, the pen must not go back into the fridge. Returning it to cold storage after it has been at room temperature for the full period does not reset or extend the limit, the licensed window has simply expired.

Dispose of used and expired pens safely in an approved sharps bin. If you are not sure whether your pen is in date or has been stored correctly, the cautious choice is to discard it and contact your prescribing service. A wasted pen is frustrating, but injecting a degraded medicine is a greater risk. Our prescribers are available for aftercare questions seven days a week.

For the situation where a pen has been out of the fridge for exactly one day and you're unsure whether to continue using it, this page addresses the 24-hour scenario directly.

Signs a pen should not be used regardless of storage time

The 28-day rule assumes correct storage throughout. A pen that has been exposed to temperatures above 30°C, left in direct sunlight, or frozen at any point should not be used, regardless of where it sits on that 28-day timeline. Physically, the solution in a semaglutide pen should appear clear and colourless. If it looks cloudy, discoloured or contains particles, do not inject it.

Semaglutide is a protein-based medicine; heat and light can degrade it in ways that are not always visible. The NHS semaglutide information page reinforces the importance of checking appearance before each dose. If anything looks wrong, or if you have any doubt about your pen's storage history, contact your prescribing service before injecting. For broader questions about what Wegovy is and how treatment works, the Wegovy overview is a useful starting point. If cost or access is on your mind, the Wegovy cost guide sets out what private treatment typically includes. And if you are still at the stage of deciding whether treatment is right for you, checking your eligibility with our prescribers is a good next step, no commitment required.
