Start journey Learn moreEach Mounjaro KwikPen contains four doses, one per week, and treatment typically runs through six dose strengths over many months. The total number of doses any individual takes depends on how far they titrate and how long they continue — that is a clinical decision, not a fixed number. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine; a GPhC-registered prescriber assesses whether it is suitable before any treatment begins.

A question our prescribers hear most weeks is some version of: 'How many doses will I need before it works?' Hidden inside that question is a common assumption — that you begin on a therapeutic dose and simply count forward. That is not how Mounjaro is designed to be used.
The starter dose, 2.5 mg, exists primarily to let your body adjust to the medicine. At that strength, most people notice very little in the way of weight change; what it is doing is reducing the likelihood of the nausea and digestive upset that comes with jumping straight to a higher level. The 5 mg dose is where many people begin to see meaningful appetite change, and even then the prescriber is watching closely before moving further.
So the first thing to set aside is the idea that there is a correct total number of doses. There is not. What exists is a schedule, and your place within it is reviewed regularly. The NHS tirzepatide page describes the gradual titration approach that underpins safe use.
Mounjaro comes in six strengths: 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and 15 mg. Every pen, at every strength, contains four doses, one injection per week, making each pen a four-week supply. That structure is consistent across the range, which is worth knowing if you are trying to plan ahead or understand what you are receiving.
If someone were to move through every rung of the schedule at the minimum pace (four weeks at each level) they would use six pens to reach 15 mg, representing 24 individual weekly doses before they even arrive at the highest strength. In practice, many people pause their titration at a dose their body tolerates well, and some never reach 15 mg. For a closer look at exactly what is inside each pen, the pen contents page goes into the detail by strength.
There is also more to the volume story than the dose count alone. If you want to understand the liquid measurement behind each injection, this page on Mounjaro dose volume in ml covers it precisely.
Several factors combine to determine how many doses someone actually takes. First, titration pace: prescribers in the UK typically move doses upward in four-week steps, but this is not obligatory, someone experiencing persistent nausea may stay at a given strength for eight weeks before progressing. Second, the maintenance dose chosen: not everyone reaches 15 mg, and clinical guidance does not require them to. Higher doses carry stronger evidence for greater average weight loss, but tolerability matters too.
Third, response review: NICE's appraisal of tirzepatide (TA1026) notes that if someone loses less than 5% of their body weight after six months at the highest tolerated dose, continuing should be reviewed. That is a meaningful checkpoint, not a failure, and it shapes how long a course lasts. Fourth, individual circumstances: health changes, life events, prescriber recommendations, all of these can alter the picture. A full overview of the medicine, including how it works across the course of treatment, is on the Mounjaro information page.
Understanding how many doses you are likely to go through also matters for budgeting. Because each pen covers four weeks at one strength, a titration period will involve several different pens before you reach a stable dose. The Mounjaro pricing page sets out what private treatment costs in context, including what a full price should include, consultation, prescription, clinical review, and delivery. Private treatment through a regulated online pharmacy bypasses NHS waiting lists for those who do not meet the current NHS criteria, but that does not change how the dose schedule works; the same clinical titration logic applies either way. If you are weighing up whether private treatment suits your situation, the treatment options page is a good starting point.
