Start journey Learn moreMost people notice some reduction in appetite within the first one to two weeks of starting Wegovy, though the full effect builds gradually over months as the dose increases. That said, the first injection does not deliver the appetite control you'll eventually experience — and understanding why matters for staying the course. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription-only medicine; whether it's right for you is decided by a prescriber following clinical assessment.

It's tempting to expect an immediate off-switch. The pen arrives, you inject, and by Tuesday you're indifferent to biscuits. Lots of people approach the first week hoping for exactly that, and feeling quietly deflated when hunger still turns up on schedule.
The reality is more nuanced, and once you understand it, it's actually reassuring. Semaglutide works by activating GLP-1 receptors in the gut and the brain. It slows gastric emptying so food stays with you longer, and it signals the hypothalamus to dial back hunger hormones. Both effects are present from the first dose. But the starting dose, 0.25mg weekly, is calibrated for tolerability (to let your body adjust without a surge of nausea) not to deliver peak appetite suppression. That comes later, as the prescriber steps the dose up toward the 2.4mg maintenance level (or 7.2mg, following MHRA approval of a higher-dose pen in April 2026).
So the question of how quickly Wegovy suppresses appetite has two honest answers: some change, fairly soon; meaningful change, over several months. Both are true.
The first week or two often brings a mix of signals that are easy to misread. Nausea is common early on (as described on the Wegovy overview) and it can reduce food intake simply because eating feels unappealing. That is not the same as appetite suppression. Genuine appetite reduction, the kind driven by GLP-1 receptor activity in the brain, starts to emerge around the same time but is subtler: meals feel complete sooner, the urge to snack between them is quieter, and the mental background noise about food turns down a notch.
For many people, weeks two to four bring a clearer sense of these changes as the initial nausea settles. Portions naturally decrease. The urgency of hunger (that feeling of needing to eat right now) softens. Clinical investigators studying how long semaglutide takes to suppress appetite consistently report that participant-reported hunger scores improve progressively through the dose-escalation phase, not abruptly. The NHS medicines page for semaglutide notes that appetite reduction is an intended effect of the medicine, alongside its weight-management licence.
One thing worth knowing: if you hit a week where the reduction feels less pronounced, it often coincides with dose-increase timing. Each step up can briefly reset the adjustment cycle. Short-term. It passes.
The licensed escalation pathway runs from 0.25mg through 0.5mg, 1.0mg, 1.7mg, up to 2.4mg, each step held for roughly four weeks, with the prescriber's guidance determining the pace. The appetite effect tracks the dose. Participants in the STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, reported that hunger reduction was greatest once maintenance dose was reached and sustained, contributing to the ~15% average weight reduction over 68 weeks.
A useful way to think about it: the first pen's job is adjustment. The second and third pens start building the therapeutic effect. By the time most patients reach 1.7mg or 2.4mg, the change in appetite is qualitatively different from week one. Food still tastes normal; it just takes much less of it to feel satisfied, and the time between meals stops feeling like a test of willpower. If you're weighing up the broader picture of how quickly Wegovy works overall, appetite suppression is one part of a longer arc.
How quickly semaglutide reduces appetite also varies by individual, and our guide to how quickly semaglutide reduces appetite explains how body composition, gut motility, baseline hunger patterns and adherence to lifestyle changes all play a role. No two people will have an identical experience of the first month. That variability is one reason the consultation and ongoing prescriber review matter.
Reduced appetite is the mechanism; weight loss is the outcome. They don't always move in lockstep. Some people notice significant appetite reduction but don't see the scales shift for several weeks, particularly early on when GI side effects may be disrupting intake and fluid balance temporarily. Others see weight move before appetite feels dramatically different.
The honest framing, grounded in the trial evidence, is that both effects accumulate. Meaningful weight loss in the STEP 1 trial became statistically clear from around week four, with the curve steepening as doses escalated. If you want to understand how long before Wegovy suppresses appetite in more detail, that page sets out what the evidence suggests at each stage of the dose-escalation schedule. You can also read more about the overall timeline of how long Wegovy takes to work if you want to set realistic expectations before starting.
Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine and is not assessed by regulators for rapid or cosmetic weight loss. If you're considering it, the sensible starting point is understanding whether it's clinically suitable for you.
