Start journey Learn moreFacial volume loss during rapid weight reduction on Wegovy is real, and it is possible to slow or minimise it. The practical levers are protein intake, resistance exercise, hydration, and the pace of weight loss itself — none of which require stopping treatment. These are prescription-only medicines; a clinician decides whether Wegovy is right for you and how your treatment is managed. What follows is what the evidence and clinical experience actually suggest about protecting your face while the rest of your body changes.

The phrase "Wegovy face" describes the gaunt or hollowed look some people notice after significant weight loss on semaglutide. It is worth being clear about what is actually happening: Wegovy reduces appetite and energy intake, which leads the body to draw on fat stores for fuel. Fat is stored throughout the body (including the cheeks, temples and around the eyes) so as total fat mass falls, facial volume falls too. This is the same process that happens with any meaningful weight loss, whether from surgery, diet or other medicines. Semaglutide does not specifically target facial fat or act on facial tissue in any unusual way.
The degree of change depends on how much weight is lost, how quickly, your age, skin elasticity and your genetic tendency to carry fat in the face. People who carry a lot of facial fat to begin with often notice more change; those who lose weight quickly tend to see more pronounced effects than those who lose it gradually. Understanding this helps you make better decisions about how you approach treatment. You can read more about what the condition actually involves on our Wegovy face overview page, and our semaglutide face page goes deeper into how the medicine specifically relates to these changes.
A question our prescribers hear most weeks is whether there is anything specific to eat to protect the face on Wegovy. The honest answer is not a superfood, it is protein, consistently eaten, even when appetite is low.
When calorie intake falls sharply, the body can break down lean tissue as well as fat. Skin quality, the elasticity that keeps facial contours looking full, and the underlying muscle all depend on adequate protein. The challenge on GLP-1 treatment is that nausea and reduced appetite make protein-rich foods (meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes) feel unappealing, particularly in the early weeks. Prioritising protein at the start of each meal, before appetite closes off, is a simple structural fix. Most adults losing weight are advised to aim for at least 1.2–1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, though your personal target is something to discuss with the clinician overseeing your treatment rather than a figure to self-prescribe. If you want to go further, our page on what to avoid while taking Wegovy covers the wider dietary and lifestyle pitfalls that can make facial changes more likely.
Hydration matters too. Dehydration thins the skin and accentuates hollow areas. The NHS patient information on semaglutide notes that GI side effects including vomiting and diarrhoea can increase fluid loss, so staying ahead of hydration is both a safety point and a skin-quality one.
Cardiovascular exercise burns calories; resistance training preserves the lean mass that gives your body (and your face) its shape. When weight loss is rapid without strength work, a greater proportion of what is lost comes from muscle rather than fat alone. NHS England's guidance on weight-management medicines recommends increased physical activity alongside treatment precisely because of this dynamic.
You do not need to lift heavy weights in a gym. Bodyweight exercises, resistance bands or light weights, done two or three times a week with progressive effort, are enough to signal to the body that muscle is worth keeping. The face itself cannot be targeted with specific exercises in any meaningful way, but preserving overall lean mass throughout the body supports skin tension and the subcutaneous structures that underpin your face's appearance.
This is also a reason why treatment pace matters. Starting at the lowest dose of Wegovy and titrating slowly under clinical guidance (rather than pushing to the highest dose as quickly as possible) gives your body more time to adapt and allows exercise habits to form alongside the weight change. Our guide to things to avoid on Wegovy includes advice on behaviours that can make facial changes more pronounced, including rushing dose escalation. The semaglutide information page covers the titration schedule and how prescribers manage dose progression.
Good skincare does not reverse facial volume loss, but it does affect how the skin responds to it. Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives), collagen-supporting ingredients like vitamin C, and consistent sun protection all help maintain skin quality over time. These are standard recommendations for anyone experiencing significant weight change, not specific to Wegovy.
Some people who lose substantial weight decide to speak to a dermatologist or aesthetic clinician about non-surgical approaches, hyaluronic acid fillers, for example, can restore volume in specific areas. This is entirely outside what a weight-loss prescriber manages, and it is not something nume factors into the treatment decision. What is worth knowing is that many clinicians advise waiting until weight has stabilised before considering any cosmetic procedure, since the face may continue to change for months after the active weight-loss phase ends.
The bigger picture is that for most people, the health gains from meaningful weight loss are substantial and well-evidenced. If the face-change question is one of the things making you hesitant about starting or continuing treatment, it is worth raising directly with your prescriber rather than adjusting treatment on your own. If you are weighing up your options more broadly, our weight-loss treatment overview covers what is currently licensed in the UK.
