How to Dispose of Mounjaro Needles the Right Way

Step 1, Remove the needle straight after injecting, while the pen is still in your hand

The moment your weekly dose is complete, the needle comes off. Step 2, Use a proper sharps container, every time

A clinical-grade sharps bin is not optional. In the UK, Mounjaro needles are classified as clinical waste, and household bins (including the recycling and food-waste caddies) are not a legal disposal route. The standard home-use container is yellow with a black lid, available from pharmacies and from services such as the one linked in the accessories section below.

Fill the container only to the marked fill line, usually two-thirds full. Overfilling makes it harder to seal and risks a needle working its way through the lid. Once sealed, a sharps bin cannot be reopened, so do not seal it until it is genuinely full. A 1-litre sharps container is a practical size for most people on weekly Mounjaro injections.

Store the bin somewhere children and pets cannot reach it, away from direct sunlight. A high shelf or a lockable cupboard works well.

Step 3, Arrange collection or find a drop-off point

Most English local authorities offer a free sharps-collection service for people using medicines at home. You can request this through your council's website, or ask your GP practice or local pharmacy to arrange it. Some pharmacies accept sealed sharps bins over the counter, though this is at the individual pharmacy's discretion rather than a universal obligation. It is worth ringing ahead. Step 4 (Keep the rest of your injection kit safe too
