Start journey Learn moreDisposing of used Wegovy pens and getting a new supply are two sides of the same practical question. The short answer on disposal: used pens contain a needle and must go into an approved sharps container, never a household bin. And to get Wegovy in the UK legally, you need a prescription following a clinical assessment — there is no other lawful route. Here is how both work, step by step.

A used Wegovy pre-filled pen is a sharps item. The needle, even when retracted, has been in contact with skin and medication, so it cannot go into a standard household recycling or general waste bin. The correct container is an approved yellow sharps bin, which you can buy from pharmacies or obtain free from some NHS GP practices and community pharmacies depending on your area.
Once the pen has delivered its final dose, place the whole pen (cap and all) directly into the sharps bin without trying to remove the needle separately. When the bin is three-quarters full, seal it. Most local councils collect sealed sharps bins as part of a clinical waste collection scheme; check your local authority's website or ask at your GP surgery. Some pharmacies, including large chains, also accept sealed bins for disposal. Do not put a sealed sharps bin in your kerbside recycling.
Storing your pens between doses matters too. Wegovy pens should be kept refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C; the Patient Information Leaflet (available via the Mounjaro and Wegovy SmPCs on the eMC) gives the precise room-temperature window for when refrigeration is temporarily unavailable, always follow that, rather than any general guidance.

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a Prescription-Only Medicine. That is not a technicality, it reflects a genuine clinical need for assessment before every course and every dose change. Under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, it cannot lawfully be sold or supplied without a valid prescription issued following a clinical consultation.
The MHRA has repeatedly warned the public about counterfeit weight-loss pens circulating online and through social media. In October 2023 it seized hundreds of fake pens (some containing insulin rather than semaglutide) and enforcement has escalated significantly since, with around 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines (approximately £45 million street value) seized through 2025 alone. The pattern is consistent: sellers offering these medicines without a prescription, at prices far below what legitimate supply costs, often via Instagram or Telegram. If you spot a seller operating that way, report them at the MHRA's Yellow Card site.
The safest first check before using any online pharmacy is to look it up on the GPhC pharmacy register. A registered pharmacy carries a premises registration number you can verify in seconds. At nume, ours is 9012878, verifiable directly at the GPhC register.
Wegovy is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 29.9 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. Lower thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance. BMI alone does not guarantee a prescription, a prescriber considers the full clinical picture, including your medical history and any medicines you already take.
At nume the process runs like this. You complete a structured consultation online; a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber reviews it, personally, the same day. If approved as clinically suitable, your treatment is dispensed from our GPhC-registered pharmacy and dispatched via DPD. If you place your order before the 12pm cut-off, that dispatch happens the same day: useful if you want it before the working week ends.
Every repeat order goes through the same clinical re-review. There is no subscription that quietly renews; each time, a prescriber checks in. You can read more about the full Wegovy access process or explore the Wegovy treatment overview if you want the broader clinical picture before starting a consultation.
For a step-by-step look at delivery timelines and what to expect once your order is placed, the Wegovy next-day delivery page has the detail. And if you are still researching whether this treatment is right for you, our weight-loss overview covers all the licensed options in one place.
Semaglutide's clinical evidence base is substantial, the STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, reported around 15% average body-weight reduction over 68 weeks at the 2.4mg maintenance dose alongside lifestyle changes. The NICE appraisal of semaglutide (TA875) sets out the eligibility thresholds applied in NHS settings. Private eligibility follows the licensed criteria from the SmPC, assessed per individual by a prescriber.
Questions about nausea that shows up in the first few weeks? Managing nausea on Wegovy is covered separately. Headaches are another common early experience, that guide explains what typically helps and when to flag it to a clinician.
