Start journey Learn moreTo inject Wegovy in the upper thigh, choose the outer, fleshy part of either thigh, clean the skin, pinch gently if needed, press the pen firmly until you hear a click, then hold it in place for ten seconds before removing it. The thigh is one of three licensed injection sites for Wegovy, alongside the abdomen and upper arm, and many people find it the most practical site for self-injection — especially if you prefer to sit down. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription-only medicine; a GPhC-registered prescriber must assess your suitability before treatment begins, as described in the NHS patient guide for semaglutide.

Pull your Wegovy pen from the fridge and set it on a clean surface for about 30 minutes. Cold medicine can sting more on injection, so letting it come closer to room temperature first makes the experience noticeably more comfortable. While you wait, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Check the pen's label to confirm it's the correct dose and that the use-by date hasn't passed. Through the viewing window the liquid should look clear and colourless; discard the pen and contact your prescriber if it looks cloudy or contains particles. A quick clean of the injection site with an alcohol swab and a few seconds to let it dry fully reduces the small risk of introducing bacteria. Don't blow on it or fan it dry.
For the upper thigh, seat yourself comfortably (on a bed, sofa or chair) so the muscle is relaxed and not tensed. Tensed thigh muscles make the injection harder and slightly more uncomfortable. Take off the cap only when you are ready to inject; recapping is not recommended and is a common cause of accidental needle-stick.
Position the pen against the outer, front-facing part of your thigh. The target zone runs roughly from mid-thigh up toward the hip, never the inner thigh, and not the area within about five centimetres of the knee joint. If you have a leaner build, you may find it helpful to pinch a small fold of skin gently between your fingers before pressing the pen down; this lifts subcutaneous tissue away from muscle. Most people with a larger thigh don't need to pinch at all.
Press the pen firmly and squarely against the skin until you hear or feel a click. That click signals the injection has started. Keep the pen pressed in place for a full ten seconds, the pen delivers the medicine slowly and lifting early means you may not receive the full dose. After ten seconds, lift the pen straight away from the skin. A small red dot or minor bleeding at the site is completely normal; press a clean piece of cotton wool gently on the spot if needed, but don't rub.
Our guide on injecting Wegovy in the thigh covers site selection in more detail if you want to compare the upper and mid-thigh zones before settling on a routine, and if you'd like a closer look at placement technique, our page on how to inject Wegovy in the thigh walks through each step with additional detail.
Rotating where you inject each week is one of the most practical things you can do to protect skin health and maintain consistent absorption. The SmPC recommends cycling between the three licensed sites: abdomen, thigh and upper arm. Within the thigh itself, you can alternate between left and right, and move slightly up or down the outer surface week by week, keeping each injection at least a couple of centimetres from the last one.
A simple note on your phone calendar or the sticker chart some pens come with is enough to track this. Some people settle on a pattern (left thigh, right thigh, abdomen) and repeat it. The key is that you're not landing the pen in exactly the same spot two weeks running. If you'd like fuller guidance on positioning before you start, our page on how to inject Wegovy into the thigh covers angle, depth and technique in one place, and our page on Wegovy upper-arm injections explains when that site works well and how to reach it safely.
Disposal matters too. Used pens must not go in household rubbish or recycling. A dedicated sharps container is the safe, legal way to store used pens until your local pharmacy or council sharps collection scheme takes them. Ask your pharmacist about collection options in your area.
Mild redness, minor bruising or a small bump at the thigh injection site are common and generally resolve within a day or two. Persistent hard lumps under the skin suggest lipohypertrophy from repeated use of the same spot, the fix is stricter rotation going forward, and a conversation with your prescriber if it doesn't improve. Our page on injecting Wegovy in the thigh includes practical tips on how to vary your exact placement each week to help prevent this.
Systemically, Wegovy's most common side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, loose stools or constipation, indigestion and occasionally vomiting. These tend to peak in the first days after a new dose level and ease as your body adjusts. Staying well hydrated and eating smaller, lower-fat meals helps many people manage the early weeks. The NHS semaglutide page lists what to watch for and when to seek help.
One symptom that always warrants urgent attention is severe abdominal pain that radiates toward the back, with or without vomiting. The MHRA highlighted acute pancreatitis as a known, infrequent but serious risk in a January 2026 Drug Safety Update; if you experience this, stop the injection and get same-day medical help. Any suspected side effects can be reported at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk. You can also find broader safety context on our Wegovy overview page, and the FAQs section answers common questions about managing early reactions.
If questions arise about your dose, timing or technique, the best source of advice is always your prescriber or the Patient Information Leaflet included with your pen, not a forum or a general article. If you're not yet on treatment and would like to explore whether Wegovy is clinically suitable for you, you can check your eligibility with our prescribers at any time.
