How to Insert Wegovy: What Most People Get Wrong First

The myth that stops people before they start

The most common misconception about inserting a Wegovy pen is that it works like an old-fashioned syringe — that you will see the needle, push a plunger yourself, and control the dose by hand. None of that is true. The Wegovy pen is an auto-injector: the needle is concealed inside the cap, the dose is pre-loaded at the factory, and a spring mechanism drives the injection once you press the button. You do not see the needle during normal use. For the majority of people who try it, the sensation is a brief pinch, sometimes less than that. The anticipation is almost always worse than the reality.

A second myth worth clearing up: some people believe the injection site is fixed, that it always has to be the stomach. It does not. The abdomen (at least a few centimetres away from the navel), the front of the thigh, and the upper arm are all licensed sites. Rotating between them, and within each site, gives the skin time to recover and keeps injections comfortable over the weeks and months of treatment. Step by step: how to insert a Wegovy pen correctly

Wash your hands thoroughly and gather what you need: your pen (taken from the fridge and left at room temperature for around 30 minutes so the injection is more comfortable), an alcohol swab, and a sharps bin. Check the pen label to confirm it is the right dose and within its expiry date. Remove it from the fridge the night before if that fits your routine better; mornings can be rushed.

Remove the pen cap by pulling it straight off, do not twist. Check the liquid in the window: it should be clear and colourless. If it looks cloudy, discoloured, or contains particles, do not use that pen and contact your prescriber or pharmacy. Clean the chosen skin site with an alcohol swab and let it dry completely before injecting.

Pinch a fold of skin gently, hold the pen at a 90-degree angle to the skin, and press the tip firmly against it. Press the injection button (usually on the opposite end) and hold the pen in place. You will hear a click as the injection begins. Keep holding until a second click or until the yellow indicator in the window has fully moved, this confirms the full dose was delivered. Release the skin, withdraw the pen, and dispose of it immediately in a sharps container. Do not recap the pen.

What counts as a correct insertion, and what to do when it goes wrong

A correctly inserted dose leaves very little trace: maybe a small red mark that fades within an hour, occasionally a tiny drop of blood or clear fluid at the site. Neither is a reason to repeat the injection. If you see a large volume of fluid on the skin, or the yellow indicator did not move, the dose may not have been delivered fully, do not inject again without speaking to your prescriber or pharmacy first, because taking an accidental double dose carries real risks.

Site reactions are the most frequently reported injection-related issue: redness, itching, or small lumps at the spot. Rotating sites consistently is the best prevention. Persistent lumps or hardened skin (lipohypertrophy) at a favourite site are a signal to vary your locations more actively and worth mentioning at your next review.

The broader side-effect profile of Wegovy is led by gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, loose stools, constipation, indigestion) rather than injection-related ones. Storing your pens and fitting injections into a normal week

Wegovy pens are stored in the fridge at 2–8°C until needed. Once a pen has been out of the fridge, refer to the Patient Information Leaflet for exactly how long it may remain at room temperature, the window varies by product format, and quoting a number here when you should check your own leaflet would not serve you well. Keep the pen in its original carton, away from direct light.
