Start journey Learn moreIn the UK, weight loss injections are prescription-only medicines, which means the only legal route to obtaining them is through a clinical assessment by a registered prescriber. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are the two medicines currently licensed for weight management — both require a genuine prescription before any pharmacy can dispense them. This page walks through how that process actually works, what to expect, and how to tell a legitimate service from one that isn't. If you've been searching for weight loss injections and want to know where to start, the short answer is: a consultation comes first, every time.

How it works
Tell us about your health, history and goals. Free, online, and confidential — no commitment, no waiting room.
Our team reviews your health the same day — never an algorithm, and approves your treatment there and then if eligible.
Order by 12pm, dispatched same day, delivered free the next working day — the nume Promise.
Mounjaro and Wegovy sit in the same legal category as blood-pressure medication and antibiotics: you can't buy them over a counter or from a social-media seller, and no credible pharmacy will supply them without sight of a valid prescription. That prescription can only follow a proper clinical assessment. This isn't bureaucracy for its own sake. GLP-1 medicines interact with other conditions and medications, and a good prescriber needs to know your health history before deciding whether treatment is appropriate for you.
With a regulated online pharmacy such as nume, that assessment happens digitally. You fill in a detailed clinical questionnaire, go through photo-ID verification, and complete a live video weight check, so there's no guesswork about your starting point. A GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber then reads your answers personally. Not software, not a chatbot: a named clinician who can approve, ask follow-up questions, or decline where treatment isn't suitable.
If you'd prefer to start by reading what the assessment involves, the process of asking for weight loss injections is covered in more detail on its own page.
Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea or cardiovascular disease. Lower BMI thresholds can apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK clinical guidance. BMI alone doesn't guarantee approval, a prescriber looks at contraindications, current medications, and your overall health picture before deciding.
NHS access to these medicines exists but is highly restricted. Mounjaro is being rolled out in phases through GP practices and specialist services, with strict criteria around BMI and the number of qualifying conditions. Waiting lists for NHS weight management services are commonly long. For many people, a private regulated pharmacy offers a faster, equally safe route, subject to the same prescription requirements. The full guide to weight loss injections explains both routes side by side.
NICE's guidance on tirzepatide (published as NICE technology appraisal TA1026) sets out the clinical evidence base that informs prescribing decisions in the UK. Worth reading if you want to understand what the evidence actually says, not just the headlines.
Once a prescriber has reviewed your consultation and issued a prescription, the pharmacy dispenses and dispatches your treatment. At nume, orders placed before midday on a working day are dispatched the same day. What shows up the next working day is a DPD parcel, tracked on your phone, in plain unbranded packaging, nothing on the outside signals what's inside. The pen itself is a small pre-filled device, around the size of a marker pen, with a hidden needle tip that retracts automatically after use. It's designed to be used at home, once a week, in a few seconds. Full technique guidance is covered on our injection technique page, and for a broader walkthrough of first-time use, the how to use weight loss injections guide is a good starting point.
Treatment typically begins at a low starting dose (2.5mg for Mounjaro) which gives your body a few weeks to adjust before any titration. The prescriber decides the schedule. Disposal of used pens requires a sharps bin; a 1-litre sharps container is available if you need one.
The MHRA has issued multiple warnings about counterfeit weight loss pens circulating online, including fake pens found to contain insulin rather than the labelled medicine, with serious consequences for people who used them. In 2025 alone, approximately 20 million doses of illegally traded weight loss medicines, worth around £45 million, were seized. The pattern is consistent: sellers offering these medicines without a prescription, prices dramatically below market rate, discount codes, and no verifiable pharmacy registration.
Checking is simple. Every legal UK pharmacy must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. You can search the GPhC register at pharmacyregulation.org, or verify nume directly using our GPhC premises registration number 9012878. If a seller isn't on that register, don't buy from them. If something feels too cheap or too easy, treat it as a warning sign, not a bargain. The frequently asked questions page covers what else to look out for when assessing an online pharmacy. You can also report suspect sellers directly through the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme.
If you have questions about cost and what a legitimate private prescription includes, the weight loss injection cost page sets it out honestly. When you're ready to take the first step, our prescribers are here.
