How to prep your Mounjaro pen before every injection

Step 1: gather what you need and let the pen warm up

Take your pen from the fridge a short while before you plan to inject. Injecting cold medicine straight from the fridge is one of the things our prescribers hear patients mention most, it can make the injection feel more uncomfortable than it needs to be. While the pen warms, gather a fresh needle, an alcohol swab, and a sharps container for safe disposal. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Choose your injection site (abdomen, outer thigh, or upper arm all work) and plan to rotate away from wherever you injected last week to give that area time to recover.

One thing worth clearing up: you do not need to prime or "air-shot" the Mounjaro KwikPen before use. This is a common assumption carried over from other injectable medicines, but the KwikPen is factory-set and ready. Priming wastes a dose. Step 2: inspect the pen and attach a fresh needle

Look through the viewing window. The liquid should be clear or very faintly yellow, transparent, no floating particles, no cloudiness. If anything looks off, do not use that dose; contact our pharmacy or your prescribing team. Also check the expiry date on the label before every injection, not just when you first open the box.

Peel the paper tab from a new needle and push it straight onto the pen's needle port, then turn it until it sits firmly. Remove the outer needle cap first (keep it, you'll need it for removal), then the inner cap. A tiny drop of liquid or a small air bubble at the needle tip is normal and not a reason to worry. If you are on a dose other than 2.5mg, the dial on the pen will already be set to your correct dose from your prescriber's instructions, you do not adjust it yourself. Step 3: clean the injection site and confirm you're ready

Wipe your chosen skin area with an alcohol swab and let it dry for a few seconds before injecting. Injecting into wet skin can sting more and slightly increases infection risk. Dry skin also helps the needle slide in more smoothly.

Do a final check: pen inspected, expiry date read, needle attached and inner cap removed, site cleaned and dry, sharps container within reach. That is everything. After injecting, replace the outer needle cap by scooping it on with one hand (never re-cap with two hands), unscrew the used needle and drop it directly into your sharps container.
