Start journey Learn moreLoose skin during weight loss is not inevitable, and the steps that genuinely reduce the risk are practical ones you can start straight away. Semaglutide (Wegovy) tends to produce gradual weight loss over many months, which actually works in your favour when it comes to skin elasticity. That said, how your skin responds depends on factors like age, the amount of weight being lost, genetics, and what you do alongside treatment. These are prescription-only medicines, so everything below sits alongside the guidance of a prescriber who has assessed your individual circumstances.

People often assume that if they lose a significant amount of weight, sagging skin is simply what happens next. That belief can quietly undermine motivation. The reality is more nuanced. Skin is living tissue, it grows new collagen continuously, and its ability to adapt is real, even if it declines with age. The extent to which skin retells itself after fat loss depends partly on how fast the fat disappears, partly on the skin's existing condition, and partly on what you feed it.
Wegovy works over many months. The titration from 0.25 mg up to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose takes roughly four to five months in itself, and meaningful body weight changes typically accumulate across 68 weeks or more, as seen in the STEP 1 trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine. That timeline is not a disadvantage for your skin, gradual loss gives the dermis time to remodel rather than simply draping over a newly smaller frame. Understanding this is genuinely useful, because it means the choices you make over those same months have real bearing on the outcome.
There is more detail on whether Wegovy causes loose skin and what the evidence says about risk factors, worth reading if you want the fuller picture before deciding what to prioritise.
Of all the lifestyle factors studied alongside weight loss, preserving lean muscle mass is the one most consistently associated with better skin outcomes. Muscle fills volume under the skin. When you lose fat rapidly without maintaining muscle, the skin has nothing to rest against. Resistance exercise (weight training, resistance bands, bodyweight work) helps preserve that structure.
Protein is the other side of the same coin. Collagen, the protein that gives skin its firmness, is synthesised from amino acids. During a period of significant weight loss, dietary protein intake often falls because overall appetite falls, particularly on semaglutide. Aiming for adequate protein each day (the exact amount depends on your weight and activity level, and a prescriber or dietitian can advise) helps maintain both muscle and the skin's own repair processes.
Our page on preventing muscle loss on Wegovy covers this in detail, including why the combination of protein and exercise is more effective than either alone. Hydration sits alongside both: well-hydrated skin retains elasticity more effectively, and adequate fluid intake also supports the kidneys during periods when GI side effects could otherwise lead to low-grade dehydration.
Topical skincare is a smaller contributor than nutrition and exercise, but it is not meaningless. Moisturisers that contain ingredients such as retinoids, hyaluronic acid or peptides support surface hydration and may modestly assist collagen turnover, though the evidence base here is less robust than for lifestyle factors, so claims should be read with appropriate scepticism. What is clearer is that UV exposure degrades collagen, and consistent sun protection is one of the most evidence-supported things you can do to preserve skin quality over time.
Body-contouring devices and treatments (radiofrequency, ultrasound, laser tightening) are sometimes discussed in this context. They fall outside the scope of what any prescriber can advise on within a weight-management consultation, but they are options worth raising with a dermatologist if skin laxity becomes a concern further into treatment. Surgical removal of excess skin is a separate consideration for people who have lost very large amounts of weight, loose skin after Wegovy explores the different scenarios and what options exist.
The rate of loss matters too. If you are concerned your weight is dropping faster than you expected, that is worth raising with your prescriber before the next dose increase rather than after. On Wegovy's typical weight-loss curve, most people see the steepest drop in the first few months, which is also when the skin has the least time to adapt, the period when the practical steps above matter most.
Loose skin risk does not disappear once you reach your target weight. The transition off treatment (which should always be planned with a prescriber) is a period when some weight regain is common if lifestyle changes have not been embedded. Regained weight stretches skin that has partially contracted. That cycle of loss and regain tends to be harder on skin than a single, managed reduction.
The NHS weight management injections guidance emphasises wraparound diet and activity support precisely because medicines work best when lifestyle habits are built alongside them, not separately. Our page on preventing weight regain after Wegovy covers how to approach that transition thoughtfully. And if you have not yet started treatment, our Wegovy overview explains the full journey from consultation to maintenance, including what to expect at each dose stage.
Some people also ask about changes to their face during treatment. The concern is real enough to have a name, and preventing Wegovy face looks at the specific facial volume changes that can occur and what, if anything, can be done.
If questions about your skin, your protein targets or your rate of loss are sitting at the back of your mind, they are worth raising directly. Speak to our prescribers through a free consultation, and get answers that fit your situation rather than a general answer that fits everyone and no one.
