How to Store Mounjaro at Home

Unused Mounjaro KwikPens must be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C, away from the freezer compartment, freezing destroys the medicine.
Once you have taken a pen out of the fridge, it can be kept at room temperature (up to 30°C) for a limited period, always check the Patient Information Leaflet for the exact window, as it is the definitive reference.
Keep every pen away from direct light and heat sources; the original carton provides both light protection and a record of the expiry date.
Never use a pen that has been frozen, dropped, looks discoloured, or is past its expiry date, dispose of it safely in a sharps container.

Mounjaro KwikPens must be refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C until you are ready to use them. That is the non-negotiable rule. Storing a pen incorrectly can degrade the medicine inside it, which means a dose that looks fine may no longer work as it should. If you have just received your first pen and are wondering exactly what goes where, this page walks through the practical steps. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine — it reaches you after a clinical assessment by a GPhC-registered prescriber, never off a shelf — so correct storage is one of the last steps you control.

Step-by-step storage for your Mounjaro pens at home

Step 1: When your delivery arrives, act within the hour

Your Mounjaro arrives via tracked DPD delivery in plain packaging, with cold-chain packaging designed to keep the pens within the correct temperature range in transit. The moment it lands, open the outer box and transfer the pens to your fridge. Do not leave them on a worktop while you get on with something else. The fridge temperature needs to sit between 2°C and 8°C consistently, most domestic fridges manage this in the main body, but the door is a different story.

Avoid the fridge door for Mounjaro. Door shelves cycle through warmer air every time the door opens. A middle or lower shelf, towards the back, is more temperature-stable. Keep the pens in their original carton: it shields them from the fridge light and keeps the expiry date and batch number together in one place, which matters if you ever need to report something via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Never place a pen near the ice-making compartment or the freezer drawer. Freezing the medicine irreversibly damages the active ingredient. A frozen pen that has thawed still looks identical to an intact one, that is the hazard. If you suspect a pen has frozen, you can find guidance on what to do in our advice on how to store Mounjaro, and contact our clinical team rather than using it.

Step 2: Moving a pen from fridge to room temperature before injecting

Cold medicine from the fridge can make the injection more uncomfortable. Allowing the pen to warm up to room temperature before you inject is a practical step many patients find helpful. The NHS tirzepatide guidance and the Patient Information Leaflet describe how long a pen may safely remain out of the fridge, always read that leaflet, because the exact window is the authoritative figure and we do not reproduce it here in case the SmPC is updated.

Set the pen on a clean, flat surface away from a sunny windowsill or a radiator. Wrapping it in your hand or running it under warm water are not recommended approaches: unpredictable heat, even briefly, risks degrading the formulation. Patience is the right tool here. A few minutes at a steady room temperature is all it takes.

One practical note our prescribers mention regularly: the kitchen counter before breakfast is a common spot, just not next to the toaster or the kettle, where short bursts of steam and heat are routine. Somewhere shaded and dry works better. Once warmed, follow the injection steps precisely, which you can review on our full tirzepatide injection guide.

Step 3: Handling used pens and storage over the longer term

Each Mounjaro KwikPen contains four weekly doses. After each use, the pen goes back into the fridge. Keep the cap on whenever it is not in use. Do not store the pen with a needle attached, changing the needle each time you inject is the standard practice, and replacement needles can be ordered alongside your treatment if you need extras.

Used needles and finished pens must go into a sharps container, never into household recycling or a general bin. Local pharmacies and GP surgeries typically accept sealed sharps containers for disposal. The pen body is not a standard household item once it has had a needle attached; treat it accordingly from the first dose.

If you are travelling, the same 2°C–8°C rule applies. A small insulated cool bag with a gel ice pack (not direct ice) is the practical solution for journeys longer than a few hours. You can read more detail on longer-term and travel storage in our guide to how long you can store Mounjaro and separately on where to store Mounjaro in different home and travel situations. The Mounjaro SmPC on the eMC remains the definitive technical reference for storage conditions if you need the precise figures.
