How to store Wegovy when travelling: keeping your pen safe on the road

What are the exact temperature limits Wegovy has to stay within?

The licensed temperature rules for Wegovy come from the Summary of Product Characteristics published on the electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC). Before you use a pen for the first time, it must live in a refrigerator at 2–8°C, kept away from the freezer compartment and out of direct contact with any ice packs inside the fridge door.

Once you take a pen out for its first injection, the clock starts. Used pens can be stored outside the fridge at room temperature, provided that temperature stays below 30°C, for a maximum of 28 days. After 28 days out of the fridge the pen must be discarded, regardless of how much medicine remains. That 28-day window is generous enough to cover most holidays comfortably, as long as you're not storing the pen on a sun-baked car dashboard or leaving it next to a radiator.

Freezing is the other hard line. A pen that has frozen must be thrown away. Even after thawing it should not be used, because the freezing process can damage the medicine in ways that aren't visible to the eye. How do you keep the pen cold enough on a long journey?

For most people, the practical answer is a medical-grade insulated travel wallet or a small cool bag with a single ice pack wrapped in a cloth or tissue. Direct contact between an ice pack and a Wegovy pen risks freezing, which is exactly what you're trying to avoid. A barrier layer is essential.

Many patients find it simplest to move an unopened spare pen from the fridge to a cool bag the morning they travel, slipping the bag into their carry-on luggage alongside their other medicines. A longer trip abroad may warrant researching accommodation with a functioning fridge in the room before you book.

One detail worth knowing: if you're already several weeks into a pen and it still has doses left, it counts as in-use and doesn't need refrigeration as long as the temperature stays below 30°C. What do UK airports and airlines actually allow?

Injectable prescription medicines are permitted in hand luggage on UK flights. The key practical requirement is documentation: a printed prescription, a pharmacist's dispensing label on the original packaging, or a letter from your prescriber confirming that you require the medicine and that the needles are medically necessary. Carrying the original outer box with the pharmacy label is usually enough.

Wegovy pens are exempt from the standard 100ml liquids rule for carry-on bags because they're prescription medicines. You may be asked to present them separately at the security scanner, much as you would with any other injectable device. It's worth arriving with a few extra minutes in hand to avoid any queue pressure at that point.

What should you do if a pen has been mishandled or you're unsure it's safe to use?

If a pen has been left in a hot car, exposed to direct sun, or possibly frozen during transit, do not use it. A degraded pen may look and feel identical to an intact one, the medicine's effectiveness cannot be assessed by appearance alone. Discard it safely and contact your prescriber or our aftercare team to discuss your next steps.

The same rule applies if a pen has spent time in conditions you can't verify. Trust is not the right approach with a prescription medicine. A replacement pen obtained through the proper clinical route is always the safer call.
