The overlap is understandable. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in several medicines, and tirzepatide (Mounjaro's active ingredient) belongs to the same broader family of gut-hormone medicines. Both slow gastric emptying, reduce appetite and affect blood-sugar regulation, so the mechanism sounds similar on the surface. But the resemblance stops there.
Rybelsus contains semaglutide in tablet form, at doses of 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg. The MHRA licenses it specifically for type 2 diabetes in adults. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and works on two receptors simultaneously (GIP and GLP-1) making it the only dual-agonist weight-loss medicine currently licensed in the UK. Its licensed indication is weight management alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Rybelsus is not licensed for weight loss, so why does it keep coming up?
This is where it gets genuinely confusing, and you are not the first person to find it so. There is a Wegovy tablet (oral semaglutide approved by the MHRA in June 2026 specifically for weight management) but its dose ladder is completely different from Rybelsus: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, and 25 mg at maintenance. The 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg strengths belong exclusively to Rybelsus, the diabetes tablet. Using Rybelsus for weight loss would mean using it outside its licensed indication, without the clinical trial evidence or regulatory oversight that supports the weight-management products.
Prescribing a medicine off-label is sometimes appropriate in specialist practice, but it is a clinical decision, not a consumer one. Nobody should be sourcing Rybelsus with the aim of losing weight based on online discussion alone. The medicines licensed for weight management in the UK are Mounjaro, Wegovy (injection and tablet) and orlistat, and a prescriber decides which, if any, is suitable for a given person. The trial evidence for Mounjaro in weight management is substantial. In the SURMOUNT-1 study (involving over 2,500 adults with obesity) tirzepatide produced average body-weight reductions of around 20 to 21% at the highest dose over 72 weeks. There is no equivalent weight-loss trial programme for Rybelsus, because it was not developed for that purpose. What is actually licensed for weight loss in the UK, and how to access it through nume

These are the medicines with MHRA approval for weight management in adults. Rybelsus is not on that list.
