No. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue produced by recombinant DNA technology. In practical terms, that means it is synthesised in a laboratory using genetically modified yeast or bacterial cells, not extracted from animal tissue. The peptide backbone is designed to mimic a human gut hormone, but the manufacturing route is biotechnological rather than animal-derived.

That distinction matters, but it is only part of the answer. A medicine is more than its active ingredient. Formulated products contain excipients (stabilisers, buffers, preservatives and carriers) and some of those carry their own considerations for vegans.

What do the excipients in Wegovy and the Wegovy tablet contain?

The Wegovy injection's formulation includes disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol and polysorbate 80, among other components. Polysorbate 80 is the ingredient most commonly queried by vegans: it is a synthetic surfactant derived from sorbitol (a plant-based sugar alcohol) and oleic acid. Oleic acid can come from either plant sources (such as olive oil) or animal sources (tallow), and manufacturers are not always transparent about which supply chain applies to a specific batch.

The Wegovy tablet (approved by the MHRA in June 2026 as the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed in the UK for weight management) uses a different formulation. It contains semaglutide alongside SNAC (sodium N-(8-[2-hydroxybenzoyl]amino)caprylate), which is a synthetic absorption enhancer, plus standard tablet excipients. The tablet has no refrigeration requirement, which makes it straightforward to keep in a bag or on a shelf; the injection pen, by contrast, lives in the fridge until its first use.

Neither formulation carries any certification of vegan status from Novo Nordisk. For people whose veganism is rooted in firm ethical or religious grounds, that lack of formal certification is significant even where the theoretical risk of animal-derived content is low.

Does being vegan affect how semaglutide works or who can take it?

A vegan diet does not disqualify anyone from semaglutide treatment, and there is no clinical interaction between a plant-based diet and how the medicine works in the body. The licence covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above where at least one weight-related condition is present, dietary preference does not change those eligibility thresholds.

One practical point worth noting: semaglutide reduces appetite and slows gastric emptying, which makes it easier to under-eat protein.
