Is There an Age Limit for Wegovy in the UK?

Step 1: the under-18 rule is fixed and non-negotiable

Semaglutide for weight management has not been studied or authorised in children or teenagers in the UK. The NHS semaglutide medicines page is clear: Wegovy is for adults only. No prescriber working within UK regulations can supply it to someone younger than 18, regardless of BMI, family history or how persistent the request. If weight management support is needed for a younger person, the appropriate route is a referral to a paediatric specialist, not an adult weight-loss medicine.

This restriction applies equally to every form of the medicine. The newer oral semaglutide tablet approved by the MHRA in June 2026 carries the same adult-only licence. It is not an alternative route for under-18s.

Step 2: the upper end, what happens as you get older

There is no age at which Wegovy automatically becomes off-limits. The licence does not name a ceiling, and the NICE appraisal of semaglutide (TA875) does not exclude people on grounds of age alone. A 68-year-old with a BMI of 34 and hypertension is, in principle, within scope.

In practice, prescribers apply more scrutiny as the health picture becomes more complex. Older adults are statistically more likely to be managing multiple long-term conditions, taking several medicines, or working with a GP who already oversees a careful clinical balance. That does not mean treatment is unsuitable, it means the conversation needs to be more thorough.

The STEP 1 trial included adults across a wide age range; the overall average weight reduction was around 15% over 68 weeks, and the trial data did not show age as a decisive factor in effectiveness. Transparency in your consultation matters more, not less, as you get older. A few specifics to have ready:

Other medicines. GLP-1 medicines slow gastric emptying, which can affect the absorption of oral medicines taken at the same time. If you take medicines where timing or absorption is critical (certain heart or thyroid medicines, for instance) your prescriber needs to know. This is not a disqualifier; it is information that shapes safe prescribing.

Kidney function. Severe dehydration from gastrointestinal side effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea) can put extra strain on the kidneys. Older adults with pre-existing reduced kidney function need this flagged so the prescriber can give appropriate guidance.

Muscle mass. Rapid weight loss without adequate protein and resistance exercise can accelerate age-related muscle loss. Prescribers will typically want to know whether you are eating enough protein and staying active. Good advice for anyone on treatment, but worth taking particularly seriously if you are over 60.

Storing your pen correctly also matters more when routines differ. Wegovy pens are kept in the fridge (the main compartment, not the freezer drawer) and brought to room temperature briefly before use. Step 4: NHS eligibility versus private assessment

On the NHS, Wegovy is available through specialist weight management services under NICE TA875, which requires the medicine to be used for a maximum of two years within a multidisciplinary programme. NHS waiting lists are commonly long, and the criteria are strict. Private treatment through a regulated online pharmacy like nume does not have the same two-year ceiling or specialist-referral requirement, it is assessed against the licensed eligibility criteria and your individual clinical picture.
