The trial evidence for the injection is well-established. In the STEP 1 study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, adults using 2.4 mg semaglutide weekly lost an average of around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks alongside lifestyle changes. Some people are put off by the idea of self-injecting; most find the pen straightforward after the first use, but it is a fair thing to weigh up.

What the tablet involves and what the evidence shows

The Wegovy tablet was approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026, making the UK the first country in Europe to licence an oral GLP-1 medicine for weight management. It starts at 1.5 mg daily and increases through 4 mg and 9 mg to a 25 mg maintenance dose, with at least a month at each level. Taking it correctly matters more than it might sound. Oral semaglutide is absorbed poorly unless the stomach is completely empty: first thing in the morning, a small sip of plain water only (roughly up to 120 ml), then nothing (no coffee, no food, no other medicines) for at least 30 minutes. In the OASIS 4 phase-3 trial (64 weeks, 307 adults with obesity or overweight plus at least one weight-related condition, no diabetes), participants lost an average of around 13.6% of their body weight compared with around 2.4% on placebo. Among those who stuck fully to treatment, the average was closer to 17%, though that figure only holds for people with full adherence, and most real-world results sit below it. On the upside, the tablet needs no refrigeration, which makes it genuinely travel-friendly in a way the injection is not.

Where the two forms differ on side effects and what to watch for

Both forms share a broadly similar side-effect profile because the active ingredient is the same. Nausea, loose stools, constipation, indigestion and tiredness are the most commonly reported, and they tend to be most noticeable in the first few weeks or after a dose increase, then settle for most people. The tablet showed a notably higher rate of gastrointestinal side effects in the OASIS 4 trial: around 74% of tablet users reported them, compared with around 42% on placebo. That is higher than the injection trial rates, and it is thought to relate partly to how oral semaglutide is absorbed. It does not mean the tablet is more dangerous (for most people the effects were described as mild to moderate and temporary) but it is a real difference to factor in if your stomach is already sensitive.

One thing the oral versus injection question does not always surface: both forms carry a prescribing note about pancreatitis.
