It feels like the same thing said three ways. In one sense it is, the molecule in each is identical. In a more important sense, these are three distinct products, because the licence tied to each determines what it can legally be prescribed for.

In the UK, semaglutide holds marketing authorisations under two injection brand names. Wegovy is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above if a weight-related health condition is present. Ozempic carries a type 2 diabetes licence. The MHRA is clear on this: Ozempic is not approved for weight loss, and prescribing it for that purpose falls outside its licence. The molecule is the same; the approved indication is not. The short version: liraglutide and semaglutide are both GLP-1 agonists but different molecules, liraglutide (Saxenda) requires a daily injection versus once weekly for Wegovy; dulaglutide is another weekly GLP-1 injection licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) activates both GLP-1 and GIP receptors and is a distinct compound from semaglutide entirely.
