Is Wegovy available now, and how do you actually get it?

What the clinical evidence established — and why it drove approval

The question of availability starts with why regulators said yes in the first place. The STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, followed adults with obesity over 68 weeks and recorded an average body-weight reduction of around 15% on semaglutide 2.4mg, compared with around 2.4% on placebo. That was a meaningfully large effect for a medicine taken once a week.

On the back of that evidence, the MHRA licensed Wegovy for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above alongside a weight-related health condition, used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. NICE then issued its own recommendation (TA875), though with tighter criteria for NHS use: a maximum treatment duration of two years, within a specialist weight management service, and a starting BMI of 35 or above for most people (lower thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance).

The licensing story didn't stop at 2.4mg. In January 2026 the MHRA approved a 7.2mg maintenance dose, initially supplied as three 2.4mg pens per week. Then on 14 April 2026 a dedicated single-dose 7.2mg pen received approval, one pre-set weekly injection, auto-dosing, built-in covered needle. Trials at that dose recorded around 20.7% average weight loss over 72 weeks, which narrows the gap considerably with tirzepatide at its highest strength. All of that happened quickly. If your last search on whether Wegovy is available in the UK was even six months ago, the picture has changed.

NHS access: what exists now, and why the gap between licence and availability matters

Licensed doesn't automatically mean easy to get. On the NHS, Wegovy sits under NICE guidance TA875, which routes it through specialist weight management services. Referrals go through GPs, waiting lists vary by area, and many parts of the country have limited capacity in those services. From 1 April 2026, GP practices in England may prescribe tirzepatide (Mounjaro) directly under the new GP contract, Wegovy's NHS pathway remains through specialist services for now.

One practical check you can do in under a minute: if you want to find out where Wegovy is available near you, visiting your GP's website and looking for any mention of a specialist weight management referral pathway is a good starting point. Whether there's a waiting list is a separate question, but knowing the door exists matters.

The honest position is that NHS availability is real but uneven. For many people asking whether Wegovy is available now, the answer is yes in principle and slower in practice.

Private availability, and what a legitimate supply route looks like

Private pharmacies and clinics have been dispensing Wegovy since it was licensed, and for many people this is how they access it without a waiting list. The supply comes through the licensed UK supply chain; Novo Nordisk, which makes Wegovy, has authorised supplier relationships in the UK.

The key thing to verify before using any private provider is that they hold a GPhC registration. The GPhC register entry for nume's pharmacy is publicly searchable and takes seconds to confirm. Any pharmacy that cannot provide a GPhC registration number should be treated with caution. The MHRA has been clear on this: Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, and sellers offering it without a legitimate prescription process (or at prices far below the prevailing market) are a red flag worth reporting.

At a regulated service, the process runs: a clinical consultation assessed by a GPhC-registered prescriber, ID and weight verification, then dispensing if you're clinically suitable. The oral tablet: a genuinely new development for 2026

One answer to "is Wegovy available now" that nobody could have given a year ago: yes, and it now also comes as a tablet. On 11 June 2026 the MHRA approved Wegovy tablets as the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight management in the UK, the UK was the first in Europe to grant this authorisation.

The tablet contains the same semaglutide as the injection, co-formulated with an absorption enhancer. The licensed dosing schedule runs from 1.5mg daily up to a 25mg maintenance dose, stepped up over several months by a prescriber. No refrigeration is needed, which makes it genuinely easier to fit around travel or a busy week. Taking it correctly matters: first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, with a small amount of plain water, at least 30 minutes before any food or drink.

Trial data from the OASIS 4 phase-3 study recorded an average weight loss of around 13.6% versus around 2.4% on placebo over 64 weeks. Among participants who stayed fully adherent to treatment, the figure was closer to 17%. It is not available on the NHS yet (a NICE appraisal would be needed first) so it is currently accessible by private prescription only.
