Is Wegovy Safe? A Plain-Language Guide for UK Adults

Step 1: What the trial evidence and regulators actually say

The STEP 1 trial (published in the New England Journal of Medicine and involving nearly 2,000 adults with obesity) followed participants for 68 weeks on semaglutide 2.4mg. Semaglutide has since been through additional trials across cardiovascular disease and liver conditions, giving regulators a substantial body of evidence to work from. The MHRA's decision to license Wegovy for weight management rested on that data, and the Black Triangle designation exists precisely so that any new safety signals get picked up quickly in real-world use.

A point worth making plainly: if you want a thorough answer to whether Wegovy is safe to take, that question deserves more than a one-line reassurance, because a medicine that works by changing how hunger signals reach your brain and slowing how quickly your stomach empties is doing something meaningful physiologically. Side effects are the expected result of that mechanism, not a sign the medicine is counterfeit or poorly made.

Step 2: What side effects most people actually experience

The side-effect profile is led by the gut. Nausea is the most frequently reported symptom, followed by diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, indigestion and burping. These are most noticeable in the first few days after starting or after a dose step up, and they usually ease within one to two weeks. Fatigue, headaches and dizziness are reported by some people, particularly early on.

The dose schedule (starting at 0.25mg and increasing gradually, with around four weeks at each level) exists largely to give your body time to adapt and to keep those gut symptoms manageable. Rushing the titration tends to make them worse. Injection-site reactions (redness, itching or mild bruising at the spot where you inject) are also common and usually short-lived. Rotating between the abdomen, thigh and upper arm helps. Step 3: When to get medical help without delay

Most side effects are uncomfortable rather than dangerous. A smaller number require prompt attention. You should seek urgent medical help if you experience:

• Severe or persistent stomach pain, especially if it radiates toward your back, this is the key symptom of pancreatitis. In January 2026, the MHRA issued a Drug Safety Update specifically highlighting acute pancreatitis as a known but infrequent risk with GLP-1 receptor agonists; it can be serious and needs same-day assessment.
• Symptoms of a gallbladder problem, sharp pain in the upper right abdomen, particularly after eating, sometimes with fever or yellowing of the skin.
• Signs of a severe allergic reaction, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a rapid heartbeat.
• Significant dehydration, if vomiting or diarrhoea is stopping you from keeping fluids down, that needs prompt attention to protect your kidneys.
• Changes in mood, persistent low mood, or thoughts of self-harm, report these to your GP or prescriber as soon as possible.

This is open to patients as well as clinicians, and it plays a genuine role in how the regulator monitors medicines in real-world use. Step 4: Who should not use Wegovy

Wegovy is not suitable for everyone, and a prescriber works through your full health history before approving it. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or a condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2, should not use it. A history of pancreatitis, certain inflammatory bowel conditions and some other GI disorders are factors a prescriber weighs carefully.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and actively trying to conceive are clear contraindications, the medicine is not recommended in any of these situations, and MHRA guidance advises using reliable contraception while on treatment and for a period after stopping. For women on oral contraceptives specifically, semaglutide's effect on stomach emptying may affect absorption; your prescriber and the patient information leaflet will advise on this. Wegovy is not licensed for anyone under 18.
