Start journey Learn moreSemaglutide does not come in a licensed liquid form for weight loss in the UK. The medicine exists as a subcutaneous injection (Wegovy) and, as of June 2026, as an approved oral tablet — but no liquid semaglutide preparation is currently licensed by the MHRA for weight management. If you have seen "liquid semaglutide" or "wegovy liquid" advertised online, it is worth understanding what those products actually are before going any further, because the distinction has real safety implications. Wegovy and its oral counterpart are prescription-only medicines that require clinical assessment before a prescriber can authorise them.

It isn't. This is the misunderstanding at the centre of most searches on this topic, and it matters enough to address head-on. When people ask about semaglutide in liquid form, they are usually thinking of compounded semaglutide, a version mixed in a pharmacy or laboratory setting, typically presented in a vial and drawn up with a separate syringe. This is not the same product as Wegovy. Wegovy is a pre-filled, pre-dosed pen that delivers semaglutide as a clear, colourless solution under the skin; it is not, in common usage, described as a "liquid" you handle yourself.
Compounded semaglutide became widely discussed when licensed supplies ran short in the United States, and the search terms crossed the Atlantic. In the UK, the MHRA licenses medicines product by product, and compounded versions of semaglutide have not gone through that process. The regulator has warned publicly about unlicensed preparations being sold online, including through social media, and the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme continues to receive reports of adverse reactions linked to products from unverified sellers. A product labelled "semaglutide liquid" with no verifiable supply chain is not a route to Wegovy, it is a different thing entirely, with unknown purity and concentration.
Put simply: if the listing does not show a GPhC-registered pharmacy dispensing a named licensed medicine against a valid prescription, the product is not what it claims to be. Worth checking before you commit to anything.
Licensed semaglutide for weight management reaches UK patients via two routes. The first is Wegovy as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection, a pre-filled pen containing a clear solution, this is the form studied in the STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which reported an average weight reduction of around 15% over 68 weeks at the 2.4 mg maintenance dose. The MHRA approved a higher 7.2 mg dose in January 2026, and if you want to understand how that dose fits into the broader injection programme, the semaglutide 1 page covers it in detail, with a dedicated single-dose pen following in April 2026.
The second route is newer: on 11 June 2026, the MHRA approved Wegovy tablets, the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight management in the UK, making Britain the first in Europe to have it. The tablets are taken once daily, starting at 1.5 mg and titrating through to 25 mg, and the semaglutide 2 page goes into the detail of this oral stage for anyone working through the titration schedule. The phase 3 OASIS 4 trial reported an average weight loss of around 13.6% over 64 weeks; among participants who adhered fully to treatment, that figure rose to approximately 16.6%. Neither of these licensed forms is a freely handled liquid, the injection is an auto-injector pen, and the tablet is swallowed whole. For a fuller picture of the injection and tablet options side by side, the semaglutide treatment overview covers both in detail.
The trial evidence that supports NICE's recommendation for semaglutide, and the MHRA's licensing decisions, applies specifically to these preparations at these doses, not to compounded or unlicensed alternatives.
Concentration errors are the central risk with compounded injectables. Semaglutide is active at microgram-scale doses; a batch mixed incorrectly by even a small margin could deliver a meaningful overdose or, at the other extreme, an ineffective sub-therapeutic amount. The MHRA raided a site in Northampton in October 2025 that was producing counterfeit tirzepatide pens, evidence that illicit UK manufacturing of weight-loss injectables is no longer hypothetical. Fake pens containing insulin instead of the labelled medicine have caused documented hospitalisations.
The safeguard against all of this is the supply chain. A GPhC-registered pharmacy dispensing Wegovy sources directly from Novo Nordisk's authorised UK distributor, using tamper-evident packaging and cold-chain logistics. When your order arrives via DPD in plain, unbranded packaging, the pen inside carries the Novo Nordisk batch number and the pharmacy label, two things you can verify. That is a meaningfully different proposition from a vial of unlabelled liquid bought through an Instagram link.
Anyone experiencing an adverse reaction to any medicine or supplement (including anything labelled as semaglutide) can report it directly through the Yellow Card scheme. Suspect sellers can be reported there too. The semaglutide and liver health page has more on monitoring and what to flag to your clinical team.
Access to any licensed form of semaglutide for weight management in the UK (injection or tablet) starts with a clinical assessment. A prescriber reviews your health history, current medicines, BMI and any relevant conditions before deciding whether semaglutide is appropriate and, if so, which preparation suits you. This is not a formality; it is what the prescription-only classification exists for. The how to access Wegovy online page explains the private route through a regulated pharmacy in straightforward terms.
Private eligibility broadly follows the licensed indications: adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. Lower thresholds can apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK clinical guidance. The NHS route for Wegovy runs through specialist weight management services under NICE technology appraisal TA875, with specific criteria around comorbidities and a maximum treatment duration of two years within a multidisciplinary programme. Waiting lists on the NHS are commonly long, and private treatment through a regulated online pharmacy is the alternative for people who do not meet those criteria or prefer not to wait.
If you have questions about which option fits your situation, the nume FAQs cover the most common ones, and the clinical team is reachable via contact. The weight loss treatment overview is a good starting point if you are still weighing up the options.
