The medical name for Wegovy and what it tells you about how the drug works

The biggest misconception: if it contains semaglutide, surely it's all the same thing?

This is the question our prescribers hear almost weekly, and the short answer is: not quite. Semaglutide is indeed the active molecule in Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus. But the brand name is not just packaging, it reflects the licensed dose, the licensed indication, and the evidence base that regulators reviewed before granting approval. Wegovy's injection doses run from 0.25 mg up to 2.4 mg (with a newer 7.2 mg pen now approved by the MHRA), and the trials supporting those doses were run specifically in people with obesity or overweight. Ozempic tops out at 1 mg in its UK-licensed form and was studied in adults with type 2 diabetes. The populations, the doses and the approved uses are distinct, even though the molecule is the same. Prescribing Ozempic for weight loss would be off-label; a responsible prescriber working within UK regulatory guidance will not do that routinely. So when someone says they've been offered the "cheaper semaglutide" and it turns out to be Ozempic, that should prompt a careful conversation, not a quick yes.

Semaglutide versus tirzepatide: the other prescription weight-loss injection compared

Once you know Wegovy's generic name is semaglutide, the next comparison that usually arises is with tirzepatide, the medical name for Mounjaro. Semaglutide activates one receptor pathway (GLP-1). Tirzepatide activates two: GLP-1 and GIP. That dual action is the reason the two medicines are sometimes described differently in clinical literature, and it has real-world implications for average weight-loss results.

In the STEP 1 trial (68 weeks, semaglutide 2.4 mg versus placebo), participants lost an average of around 15% of body weight. In SURMOUNT-1 (72 weeks, tirzepatide 15 mg), the figure reached roughly 20–21%. A direct head-to-head study, SURMOUNT-5, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2025, confirmed that tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss than semaglutide 2.4 mg. The MHRA's approval of a 7.2 mg Wegovy pen in April 2026 narrows that gap somewhat, trials reported around 20.7% average loss over 72 weeks at that dose. Which suits any individual comes down to medical history, tolerability and prescriber assessment, not a headline number. What the generic name does and does not tell you about cost

A reasonable follow-on question: if the generic name is semaglutide, can you buy generic (non-branded) semaglutide more cheaply, the way you might buy generic ibuprofen? In the UK, currently the answer is no. Wegovy remains under patent, and only branded Wegovy pens are licensed for weight management. There are no generic semaglutide weight-loss pens on the UK market. What does appear (and this is worth knowing before you search) are unlicensed compounded semaglutide products, sometimes sold without a valid prescription. The MHRA has warned repeatedly about this risk, and fake or unlicensed injectable medicines have caused hospitalisations.

Oral semaglutide: Wegovy tablets versus Rybelsus

Since June 2026 there is a second Wegovy format: a once-daily tablet. The medical name stays the same (semaglutide) but the tablet formulation uses an absorption enhancer (SNAC) to help the molecule survive the digestive process. The Wegovy tablet is licensed for weight management (BMI 30 or above, or 27–29.9 with a weight-related condition). It involves no injections and does not need refrigeration, which some people find genuinely easier to fit into daily life, you take it first thing in the morning before the kettle has even boiled, with a small amount of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.

Rybelsus is also an oral semaglutide tablet, but at lower doses (3 mg, 7 mg, 14 mg) and licensed strictly for type 2 diabetes. Those strengths are not part of the Wegovy weight-loss schedule and should not be described as such. The Wegovy tablet dose ladder runs 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, to a 25 mg maintenance dose, an entirely different set of numbers. If a seller or website conflates Rybelsus strengths with Wegovy tablet doses, that is a red flag worth noting.
