Start journey Learn moreTaking Mounjaro alongside steroids raises a real and practical concern: corticosteroids can significantly raise blood glucose levels, which may blunt the appetite-reducing effects of tirzepatide and complicate how your prescriber monitors your progress. If you are currently prescribed steroids or need a short course, that conversation belongs in your clinical assessment before any changes to your treatment. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine and every decision about combining it with other medicines requires a prescriber who knows your full picture.

Corticosteroids) the class that includes prednisolone, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone, and methylprednisolone — are powerful anti-inflammatory medicines used for conditions ranging from asthma flares to autoimmune disease to post-surgical recovery. One of their most consistent effects is pushing blood glucose upward. They do this by signalling the liver to release stored glucose and by making cells less responsive to insulin. In people without diabetes, the body often compensates quietly. In people on tirzepatide, particularly those who have type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, the glucose-raising effect of steroids can be sizeable and rapid.
Tirzepatide works partly by boosting insulin release in response to meals and by reducing the liver's excess glucose output, so the two effects can tug against each other. How noticeable this is depends on the steroid type, dose, route of administration, and duration. A short course of prednisolone for a chest infection is a different clinical situation from long-term high-dose treatment for an inflammatory condition. The NHS tirzepatide medicines page lists potential interactions and notes that other medicines affecting blood glucose require clinical consideration, steroids are squarely in that category.
This is not a reason to avoid steroids when you need them medically. It is a reason to tell your prescriber you are on Mounjaro before a steroid course begins, so monitoring can be adjusted.
Most people focus on how steroids affect tirzepatide's efficacy, but tirzepatide also affects how orally taken steroids behave. One of tirzepatide's core mechanisms is slowing gastric emptying, food (and medicines) leave the stomach more gradually. For oral corticosteroids, this can delay peak absorption. In practice, the clinical significance of this is usually modest, but it is worth flagging to any specialist managing your steroid dose.
Injected steroids (such as a joint injection of methylprednisolone or triamcinolone) bypass the gut entirely, so gastric-emptying changes are irrelevant there. The blood-glucose-raising effect, however, still applies and can last for days or even weeks depending on the depot preparation used. Inhaled corticosteroids for asthma, at standard doses, carry far lower systemic exposure and are generally considered a lower concern; the same is broadly true for low-potency topical creams used on limited areas of skin. That said, your prescriber should have the complete list of what you take, always.
If you are curious about how tirzepatide interacts with other hormone-related medicines, our page on Mounjaro and testosterone covers a related set of questions.
If you are on Mounjaro for weight management and are not diabetic, you may not routinely check blood glucose. A course of oral steroids can still cause steroid-induced hyperglycaemia, raised blood sugar with symptoms including unusual thirst, needing to urinate more frequently, headaches, or blurred vision. These symptoms deserve prompt attention, not a wait-and-see approach. Call your GP or prescriber the same day.
For people already managing type 2 diabetes alongside tirzepatide, the risk of glucose going high during a steroid course is well documented, and your diabetes team or prescriber may want to adjust monitoring frequency or temporary management. If you experience severe stomach pain (especially pain that radiates to the back, with or without vomiting) seek medical help urgently. The MHRA Drug Safety Update programme has highlighted acute pancreatitis as a known but infrequent serious risk with GLP-1 class medicines; combining this with the physiological stress of illness (which often prompts steroid use) is worth being cautious about.
Do not stop tirzepatide abruptly mid-course without clinical guidance. And do not stop a prescribed steroid course without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it. Both decisions need a prescriber, not a forum thread.
People ask whether taking steroids disqualifies them from starting Mounjaro) usually it does not, but the timing and type of steroid matter. A prescriber reviewing your consultation looks at your full medicine list, including any regular or recent steroid use, as part of assessing whether tirzepatide is suitable right now and at what starting point.
If you are on long-term steroid treatment for a condition such as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, or adrenal insufficiency, the clinical picture is more nuanced than a short course for a chest infection, and that nuance is exactly what a qualified prescriber is there to work through with you. Our tirzepatide overview covers the full licensed indications and eligibility criteria if you are still building your understanding of the medicine itself.
Questions about Mounjaro's effect on other aspects of your metabolic health (cholesterol, for instance) are explored in our piece on Mounjaro and cholesterol, and if you are managing conditions that affect pelvic or colorectal tissue you may also find our pages on how Mounjaro relates to hemorrhoids and on Mounjaro and fibroids useful for understanding how the medicine interacts with those conditions. And if the question of whether Mounjaro is a steroid has crossed your mind (it is not), our page on whether Mounjaro is a steroid answers that directly.
