Is there a Mounjaro capsule or tablet version available in the UK?

Why does tirzepatide come as an injection, can't it just be a pill?

This question comes up constantly, and it's a fair one. GLP-1 receptor agonists like tirzepatide are peptide molecules: large, delicate proteins that stomach acid and digestive enzymes would simply destroy before they reached the bloodstream. Getting them absorbed reliably through the gut wall has been the central pharmaceutical puzzle of this drug class for years.

Novo Nordisk cracked it for semaglutide by pairing the molecule with an absorption enhancer called SNAC, resulting in Wegovy tablets, approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026 as the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight management in the UK. Eli Lilly has not yet produced an approved oral tirzepatide formulation. Research into oral tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, is ongoing, but nothing has cleared regulatory review in the UK. So for now, if tirzepatide is the right clinical choice, the KwikPen is the only licensed route. The pen is designed to be straightforward: a pre-filled, single-use device with a small, fine-gauge needle. Many people who assumed they'd hate injecting find the reality much less daunting than they expected. That's worth saying plainly.

Is the Wegovy tablet the oral alternative people are looking for?

For some people, yes. Wegovy tablets (semaglutide 25 mg maintenance dose) were approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026, making the UK the first country in Europe to license an oral GLP-1 for weight management. The medicine is taken once daily, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with a small amount of plain water, at least 30 minutes before food or other medicines.

Trial data from the OASIS 4 phase-3 study showed around 13.6% average body-weight reduction over 64 weeks compared with roughly 2.4% on placebo. Among participants who adhered fully to treatment, average loss was around 17%, though that figure only applies to that adherent subgroup, not the broader population. The side-effect profile is similar to the injection: predominantly gastrointestinal symptoms, generally mild to moderate and most noticeable at the start or after a dose step.

What about products sold online as tirzepatide capsules or Mounjaro pills?

Be direct about this: they are not legitimate. No oral tirzepatide product is licensed anywhere in the world at the time of writing. Anything described as a "Mounjaro capsule", "tirzepatide pill" or "oral Mounjaro" sold online is either mislabelled, counterfeit, or an entirely different (and unregulated) compound.

The MHRA has repeatedly warned about illegally traded and fake weight-loss products circulating online and via social media. In 2025 alone, around 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines (roughly £45 million street value) were seized, and the first illicit UK manufacturing site producing counterfeit tirzepatide pens was raided. Capsule and pill formats are even harder to verify than injection pens. You can report suspect products through the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme, which also accepts reports from members of the public.

The only safe way to access tirzepatide in the UK is through a prescription issued by a registered prescriber, dispensed by a pharmacy you can verify on the GPhC register.
