What makes Mounjaro different from other weight-loss injections?

Most injectable weight-loss medicines work on a single gut-hormone receptor: GLP-1. Mounjaro activates two (GIP and GLP-1) and that dual action is the defining clinical fact about it. Both receptors play roles in appetite regulation and blood-sugar control. By targeting both at once, tirzepatide slows gastric emptying more consistently and produces stronger signals of fullness than single-agonist medicines have managed in head-to-head comparisons.

The SURMOUNT-5 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2025, put tirzepatide directly against semaglutide 2.4 mg in adults with obesity but without diabetes. Over 72 weeks, tirzepatide produced a greater average reduction in body weight. Who does the licensed eligibility actually cover?

The UK licence covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related condition. Conditions that count include type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol and obstructive sleep apnoea, among others. For some ethnic backgrounds (South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean) UK guidance applies BMI thresholds that are 2.5 kg/m² lower, recognising that health risks occur at lower body-mass indices in these groups.

BMI alone is never the whole story. A prescriber will look at your medical history, current medicines, and any conditions that would make treatment unsuitable, a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or pancreatitis, for instance, requires careful prescriber discussion. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and trying to conceive are all situations where Mounjaro is not recommended. It is not licensed for under-18s.

What does taking Mounjaro week-to-week actually involve?

Each KwikPen delivers one weekly dose via a subcutaneous injection into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotating sites each week reduces the chance of localised skin reactions. Storage matters: the pen needs to be kept refrigerated between 2–8°C. The Patient Information Leaflet gives the exact room-temperature window allowed before the pen must be used or discarded; always follow that leaflet, not a number quoted online. Side effects are mostly gastrointestinal, particularly in the first few weeks or after a dose increase: nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion and fatigue are the most common. What does it actually cost, and what's the private route?

Mounjaro is a prescription medicine, so you cannot simply purchase it. Any legitimate supply requires a clinical consultation and a valid prescription from a registered prescriber. Eli Lilly raised its UK list price significantly from September 2025; private prices since then have typically ranged from around £149 to £375 per month depending on dose and provider.
